Default Necessary to paint primered parts?

Aside from looking ghetto as hell, is there any reason that I HAVE to paint a factory primered hood for example? Will it hold up through the winter and what not?

Thanks.

If it is a sealer primer it will probably hold up. However, it won't take much to scratch it and have it start to rust though.

No, but it will, as you mentioned, look very ghetto.

Other downside is that it will likely need stripped and re-primered if you ever do want to paint it and have it look good.

Recently I noticed my left rear door was starting to show a bit of rust on the lower part. This door had been replaced and repainted some three years ago.

The folks at the paint shop explained me that three years ago the repair job had not been done properly: they had sprayed the correct color paint but had not used enough layers of transparant coating to protect the painted surface.

Just paint it! If it does rust it will be a pain to remove rust, then prime, then paint. Just paint it with anything close to the color. Most primer does rust because its has a rough finish to let the paint stick to it. So water likes to stick too.

Well, water won't "stick" to the primer, because in reality, primer, is a porous material, even poly urethane primers are. So what happens is that, primer is sprayed to the parts right?! But the material can absorb moisture once exposed to it for too long , it doesn't have to be too many times, that's why primered cars aren't really supposed to be driven around. The black finish (flat black) that comes on hoods, fenders, and doors isn't sprayed actually, it's done using the same principle of powder coating, which is much more effective against moisture than primer, that black finish is a protection between the metal and everything else.

So, the black finish, is better than primer... but... it will rust too, because rain isn't just water anymore, it has acid to it, and that will eat away the finish. The black finish will become less and less shinny once exposed to the environment and rain, until rust starts to build up on the surface, it's a matter of a few months until it happens.

I recommend you to paint the hood as soon as you can, doesn't even have to an expensive paint, but get it done... that will save you from having to sand rust or even having to buy a new hood.

I'd paint it, avoid having to prime AGAIN if you do paint down the line.

here's the hood in question. You can see from pics (hopefully) that the primer that came on it is kind of shiny. the first pic shows this the best.. idk, it seems different from other flat primers i've seen. i guess it still probably needs painting?

Painting it would end up saving you a lot of time and frustration down the road. I'd paint it.
