Default leak in the oil pan...

My gf has a 98 accord ex 4cylinder with 150k miles. She usually uses regular mobil oil. I changed her oil and I decided to put in mobil1 synthetic oil. Now, oil is leaking through the oil pan gasket.

It never leaked oil for the oil pan gasket before. Could the leak be caused by the synthetic oil?

I read somewhere that this happens when u switch to synthetic oil in older cars.

Could anyone confirm this? I will be changing back to regular motor oil.

If this isnt causing the leak, does anyone have a link(with pics) of how to change the oil pan gasket?

Thanks.

Twin

it should not affect anything. are u sure u bolted it up nice and tight and check to see if its leaking from the oil filter. u might have left the rubber ring in there from the old one. so there might be 2 rings in there.

Its definately coming for the oil pan gasket. I checked the oil filter, its tight.

Does the 6th gen accords come with a gasket? I read that it doesnt, but my local autoparts stores carry the oil pan gasket for the 6th gen.

Does anyone have a link or instructions on how to remove the oil pan?

I have the impression that someone said the synthetic oil will probably get problems for old cars. That was why I did not switch the synthetic oil for my old 94 accord.

As far as the oil pan gasket, I believe there is one on 98 model. Chaging the oil pan gasket is pretty straightforward. You need to remove anything which blocks your way to remove the oil pan bolts and nuts. On 94 model, I needed to remove the following things before I could reach all the bolts and nuts: dropdown exhaust pipe, center beam, torque converter cover, and shift cable cover.

After removed the oil pan from engine block, remove the old gasket and clean the oil pan gasket mating surface. This process will be painful for an old car. Before installing the oil pan with new gasket, apply liquid gasket to the arch part of the gasket and oil pan. Tighten the bolts and nuts in three steps and tighten them in crisscross pattern starting from the center.

I promise without a doubt that you can solve the problem by switching back to DINO oil at the next oil change.
I've seen this at least 100 times on high milage cars.

I got the oil pan off, intalled the new gasket, and reinstalled everything.

Its still leaking. Its definately my fault. I over tightened the bolts.

What is the torque specs on the oil pan bolts? And what is the pattern?

Thanks.

10 lbf-ft. Remember to tighten the bolts in three steps and in crisscross pattern.

Is this the correct pattern to bolting the nuts?

ok if u got a new gasket u also need to use this gunky stuff which is called hondabond i believe. and u need to use that and the gasket. And put the stuff on top of the gasket. once u use this it should not leak. the tube looks like this http://shopping.lightningmotor...4.gif

Switching from regular oil to synthetic oil can cause oil leaks, that's a given.. As to replacing the oil pan gasket, last time I checked, you don't use Honda Bond, anyone that does, really doesn't know what they're doing.

The main reason why we use Honda Bond on oil pans is to apply it to the studs to help hold the gasket in place while installing the oil pan.

As for tightening it, 10 ft-lbs is correct, and that's not much at all. I usually just hold the 1/4 ratchet by the head and slowly tighten all the nuts and bolts down. Just keep in the mind the criss cross pattern and watch the gasket. If you see that the gasket is being squeezed out a little, it's too tight.

And don't forget to check for those metal gasket inserts that sometimes stick to the pan.

Good luck.

HE IS CORRECT. (PnxR) Rubber gaskets do not need any type of sealant. Maybe a small bit on paper/cork gaskets but nothing on rubber.

You do not need to apply HondaBound on whole rubber gasket. However, you will need to apply some HondaBound on the corners or arches of the gasket and mating surface. For 94 model, it is the area side to torque converter.
