I've searched around a bit, but I can't find any instructions on adjusting the timing on a 1991 Accord Lx. Please help.

First thing you'll need is a timing light.

1. hook up the timing light
2. there is a small connecter under the dash near the passenger side door, with blue wires i believe, which should have an open connection (looks like a connector that isnt connected). Use a paper clip or something to short it out- this lets the computer know you are trying to adjust the timing, or else it will try and adjust and your adjustments are worth nothing.

3. pop off the inspection cover- its a little rubber thing between your transmission and engine visible from looking above. You should see the flywheel and a little

shaped metal tab. (like shown above)

BTW- to hook up the timing light in case you dont know, hook up the + and - from the timing light respectivly to the battery, and there should be another cable which is the signal cable. Stick a needle through the coil primary wire and attatch it to the cable. (they should be blue and brown wires going into the distributer- i think the blue one you want is the + but if you get the wrong one it wont hurt anything, the light just wont work so try the other lead).

4. Loosten the 3 dist. cap bolts and leave the top one slightly snug

5. start the engine (you M.I. light might come on with that little connector shorted... i dont remember.. but if it does its okay), and point the light into the inspection cover. You should see little degree marks going around on the flywheel.

6. While looking straight on at the pointer, set the timing to the correct position by turning the dist. cap one way or the other. When you have it right shut off the engine and re-tighten the bolts and disconnect the timing light. MAKE SURE to UNHOOK the little paperclip you used to short out the lead under the dash.

7. you should be good to go now, replace the rubber inspection cover and take it for a test drive and listen to make sure the engine doesnt knock or sound funny.
