Air intake leak? What does that have anything to do with PS? Auto zone, Oriellys, Advanced Auto Parts, any auto parts store guys are usually doorknobs when it comes to anything automotive. If I've learned anything it to not trust/buy a damn thing they sell or suggest.

Anyways to your issue. Have you checked your PS fluid? There should be a dark reservoir with a red cap on the drivers side of the engine bay, if its low or even empty (which it sounds like yours is empty) it can cause a hissing and eventual failure of the PS system. Fill the reservoir up completely, start the vehicle, and begin to turn the wheel left and right for about five minutes. Its quite a workout but it is required for all of the air bubbles to be removed from the PS's high pressure system. Make sure you top off the PS fluid every once in awhile to make sure it doesn't go empty while you're bleeding it and fill back up with air.

The air intake has nothing to do with your power steering at all. Just check for air leaks around all the piping and cracks/rotted vacuum tubing.
