Default Help on choosing new car

My father is planning to buy a new car and he is undecided which way to go. He has narrow it down to two vehicles, Grand Prix and Accord. Unfortunately I don’t know much about these two vehicles to give him a good advice. Can anybody in this forum tell me the pros and cons. This new car will be a daily driver no mods.

Some questions:

Reliavility of the cars?
Any major problems on previous years (2000-2002)?
Quality of the interior, good or bad after a few years of use?

2003 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP Sedan
Price: $26,400
Type: 3.8L V6
Horsepower: 240@5200
Torque: 280@3600

2003 Honda Accord Sedan EX V6
Price: $25,800
Type: 3.0L V6
Horsepower: 240@6250
Torque: 212@5000
Fuel System: MPFI
Transmission: Auto OD
Fuel Economy: 21/30 mpg

Thanks.

From personal experience, I can tell you this: Pontiac interiors don't hold up well to sunlight. They use cheap plastic. If you tint the windows and get a dash cover, it will help. But I had a problem with the power window switch plates cracking. I also had a lot of problems with the ABS on the Grand Prix. Other than that, it was pretty reliable. My Accord gets better gas mileage, feels a lot more solid, it doesn't have a lot of the rattles that the Grand Prix did. THey are both 1992 model years, so I'm not sure how much has changed, but hope that helps.

Well you are really looking at two different sides of the coin. On one hand you have a fuel economy car with a nice 3.0L engine. On the other hand you have an almost 4.0L Supercharged V6 with a massive amount of torque. Honda's are more reliable and economical while the Pontiac is more for the supercharged engine. However i think the sedan looks like crap in my opinion, so i'd go for the GTP.

My brother owns a 2002 Grand Prix and I own a 98 Accord Coupe EX-V6. I actually think the Grand Prix is an alright car, but my brother bought it BRAND NEW AND THE RESALE VALUE IS NOW ALITTLE OVER HALF OF WHAT HE PAID!!!!!!!!!!

Pontiacs resale value sucks really, really hard

My brothers Grand Prix is alright, but I much perfer the way my Accord drives, and the Accord interior is 110% better, the interior of my brothers Grand Prix feels like the cheapest plastic. One thing I did notice about the Grand Prix is, the doors shut alot nicer than my Accord Coupe. I don't know if it is because mine is a 2-door, but my doors shut with a cheap clang, even my 2000 Si doors shut nicer, no big deal though. Anybody with a Accord coupe notice this???????

If you are buying used, I would consider the Grand Prix because you would get a great price on it, where the used Accord will not be too much cheaper than a new one. But, if you buy new, don't even consider the Grand Prix.

People,

Thank you all for your advice. My father and I went to test them again this past Saturday and he decided to go with the Pontiac Grand Prix Special Edition. The Accord is a nice car and the interior is more refined but he and I like the Grand Prix exterior more. My father is 50 years old so he is not thinking of changing the car any time soon, he liked the bigger interior and the engine Torque. Thanks again for your help.

Anton

PS. The Pontiac Grand Prix 2004 model comes up on march for the dealers to order them, they will be on sale mid year.
