Icon5 1995 Accord EX 4cyl - cruise control disengages at high speeds (70+ mph)

I have 160k mi on the car. Last week, while driving at 70+ mph on the highway, I can engage the cruise control, but then will immediately disengage. It doesn't matter if I'm going uphill or downhill. This does not happen at inner city speeds, that is, 45-60mph. I probably have a vacuum leak, but why only at high speeds?

Nothing happens when I do this, that is, the symptom does NOT disappear. BTW, this happens on any speed now, not just at high speeds; hence I changed the title.

So it will engage and the Cruise light comes on, but then it will disengage immediately or after a few seconds?

Sounds like a bad switch, loose wire or bad ground connection.

You should look into down loading a PDF version of the Accord shop manual. It has the test procedures for the cruise control system.

PM sent!

In the morning on my way to work, I go on city roads and drive 45mph. During this trip, the cruise control did WORK, that is, it came on and STAYED on. However, at the end of the day, on the way home, I took the freeway driving 70mph. In some cases, ti would come on and immediately turn off, and sometimes it would come on, stay on for about 15 secs, and then turn off.

I would suspect the VSS is dirty. VSS - Vehicle Speed Sensor Troubleshoot, Repair, Replace - How To.
Remove the sensor from the transmission, don't lose the drive pin, disassemble, clean and re-grease.
CC is probably a bit more sensitive to the VSS output than the speedometer.

Thanks @mad_mike. The link you posted just goes to a web-hosting site. Of course, YouTube to the rescue. This is for a '93, but I'll assume it'll be the same for a '94.
