The first thing I check is the oil level.

i had that once with my 99 accord coupe, and nobody could told me what it was, only one mechanic told me that the oil preasure of the car was low, and therefore the engine was fucked up, and that i need to change it, so what i did was use lucas oil because it was thicker, but it only worked for a few days, and it kept on coming backt he check engine, and mine didnt let me open the vtec, the engine didnt let me go above 3 rpm, so what i did was disconected both terminal of the battery, and put it together the positive and negative without conecting it, and left it overnigth so the ecu reboost, so when i connected it the other day the problem was gone, and its being a year since and i havent get that problem, and let me tell you that i have a turbocharge istallend on it now, so just diconect the battery, and leave it for a couple of hours, make sure that you put the negative and positive of the car's battery cables so the car stays without any electricity.

Next i'd check that the vtec presure switch an solenoid are operating properly. Then wiring and connectors.

i had this problem before and it was a pain in the *** to figure out.
the first thing i'd do is to replace the VTEC seloniod filter. it's a little gasket/screen filter that goes between your head and the spool valve (seloniod). it's a hard part to find, and you can only order it from a dealer. they go for $7.50 or so. clean out the spool valve while you're at it and have it off. it's a two piece assembly held together buy three bolts. take it apart and pulll the piston out and wash it mineral spirits or at the very least spray it off with some throttle body cleaner (carb and choke cleaner will work too. then do the same for the housing. after you've done that blow it all out real well with a air gun/nossle. make sure toi get all the passages. put in the filter screen and put the valve back together and put it back on the head. change the oil (use 3qts of 5w-30+1/2 qt of type F trans fluid) drive for ~100 miles making sure to get it into VETC (the new oil won't reach the spool valve unless it's open). if the CEL comes on and you go into limp mode then reset your ECU. (do this by dis'coing the batt and turning the key three times like you're starting the car, with the clutch in). repeat if nessary for the duration of the 100miles. change your oil and filter after that and use mobil one 5w30 for the fill. run that for 1000miles and change again. this should fix the problem. if not you may have a bad spool valve and those are $154 through the dealer only. good luck-it is a headache
