Hello everyone! I have a 98 Accord lx with a gauge cluster that doesn't have a functioning back light. After looking online I figured it was probably the multiplexer unit that is prone to going bad, since there is an aftermarket radio in the car. I attempted to "bypass" the multiplexer by shorting the two wires in this video:


I just used a paper clip to see if this would fix the problem, but it didn't. Not sure if this makes a difference, but some of the lamps on the A/C controls work, while some don't (the buttons to control where the air goes; window, head & feet, etc.). I think I saw somewhere that all of these lights would be off if the multiplexer was bad, since they're all regulated under the same dimmer. So I'm not sure why some work. I took the cluster out and actually checked to see if the bulbs themselves weren't burnt - they all shine bright! I took a closer look at the back of the cluster and through the back "casing" or protector I saw a bit of a wire. I popped the white backing off to see the circuitry of the cluster and found two wires soldered to different spots on the back of the cluster. Both cables, however, go to the one "main chip" in the circuit. It has "Japan" and some part #'s on it. Any advice on what this may be? I'm not sure how to proceed from here.
