Default Gas Gauge Rising to Full?

Hi I had the speedo issue where it wasn't working, and the tach was hit or miss. Pulled it apart and managed to fix the tach and speedo and replace all the bulbs.

However before I pulled it apart I took a picture of the gas level 2mm below 1/4 tank. After reinstalling the gauge automatically rises to above full, and can't be manipulated it goes to above full on it's own.

So my question is, why does it go to above full automatically or is it controlled by the fuel pump?

Before removing the gauge worked fine.

I ended up filling it up to measure accurately but the gauge hasn't gone down at all. Maybe it will like normal or won't? I do not know.

Thoughts?

The gauge uses resistance, sent from the fuel sending unit. Full is 3-4 ohms and roughly 105 empty. You may have pinched a wire or something. But, you can check resistance coming from the tank by using your ohm meter.

When disassembling the gauge cluster, leave the gas gauge alone.
One of the screws that attaches to the fuel gauge has one of the sensor wires attached to it. Problem is the wire is very delicate and the 'nut' that it is attached to spins. Thus you break the wire when removing/installing the gauge. This puts the gauge into reading FULL at all times.
You will need to locate the break and solder in a new piece of wire. It's a thin strand.

Check the FAQ on cluster removal/breakdown.
