Default F22B2 How much slack should the Timing Belt have?

I just did a Head Gasket, Timing Belt, and Water Pump job. I finally got the motor running but now am having some problems. When I installed the timing belt, it seemed to have too much slack in it. I tried to tighten it several times, but could not get the slack out. Now, It is making a noise. The car will start and run, but the timing belt is hitting the upper timing belt cover. It is hitting on the right side, toward the rear of the car, before it gets to the cam gear. I can hear it hitting it, and also feel it hitting it.

I know it is having a problem and it looks like I will have to tear it down again. My question is. How much slack should the Timing Belt have? How to I remove the excess slack? I have tried to do the tension adjustment described here http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y35/Tony1M/Timing2.jpg several times, but the slack never left. I dont understand what I am doing wrong? Before I tear it down again I would like to know what to do. Why wont the tensioner tension properly? Please Help.

The car is also idling low, and stalls out when I come to a stop. Could the timing belt be causing this also?

timming belt should have about a 1/2 inch of deflection when pushed on the long side.. check your timming and that you didnt install the crank 180 deg... Also you want the crank like 2 or 3 teeth before TDC and install belt then turn the crank back the 2 teeth to TDC, then tighten the timming belt.. The belt shouldnt be rock hard all the way around

I did not have the inside tensioner on right, so therefore the belt would not tighten. I cant believe the car would actually start and run with the inside tensioner on wrong. But it did.

For others out there who are installing a new timing belt make sure the fish eye hole on the inside tensioner goes onto the nipple on the car.
