Default Cooling Fans

Hello, I have a 1997 accord with the vtec motor. The question I have is about the ect switch, the switch that controls the electric fan. I noticed that the fan hardly ever comes on, so I unplugged the ect switch and closed the circuit with a piece of wire. It started the fans. So my question is should the fans be running more than just once in a while? I can let it idle for 15 minutes in the garage and the fans might kick on. I read that when the engine warms up the fans should start when it's warmed up all the way. Is this true?
Thanks for any help, jwitey

If your car is not overheating, I wouldn't worry about it. Is the temperature gauge displaying above normal operating temperatures?
