check engine light still on
just changed my catalytic converter after receiving a p0420 code on my check engine light. After resetting the code and driving for about 60 miles it came back on. It is mandatory that the light is off so I can smog it. I know that I could also change the o2 sensor and spark plugs and cap and rotor. But I am cheap and I just wasted 130 for the cat. What other options do I have? thanks, Julia

It's probably the 02 sensor (after cat). Do you have a Helm manual, so you can test it first? Don't want to waste more money.
Oh, and just another hint: Put your year and model in your signature, so we will know what car you are talking about.

aftermarket cat? did you get the shrouds back on? I had a deal with an aftermarket cat that wasn't getting quite hot enough is the reason I ask. Do you have any way to read what the rear sensor is doing at around 2k rpms .7volt or below would be good. If you suspect the cat itself get a replacement

I wish I could say that I knew what the "shrouds" are and if I put them on or not....but I can't. I'm sort of a "take the part off...put the part on" sort of gal. Kinda like a puzzle. That cat just fit back in so I assume all was A-OK. Would autozone have a tester for the cat that would read different from the diagnostic machine that read p0420?

This one came with the heat shield on it.... i think....
it looked very similar to the one I pulled off. I was told it was a matter of replacing the 6 bolts and reattaching the old o2 sensor.
