Default Accord 1989 LXI Alternator Question

I think had oil pan gasket leak so that got into alternator ( 1 year old) and now battery light comes up. I was wondering if I can take the alternator out and open it and clean etc. to get it going again or I have to buy a new one.

I am pretty sure that it is the oil as when I reach out and touch alternator from bottom my fingers get wet with oil.

Thanks all!

All depends on what the oil did.....I'd start with cleaning, or what kind of warranty did you get with the alt (1 year old)? If lifetime, pull it have it tested and replaced if tested bad.

And I hope you know how to change the alt WITHOUT pulling the CV shaft, as the manual states.....I've never pulled a cv shaft to change an alt on a 3rd gen (86-89) before.....and an LXi is even easier than the carb'd (DX, LX models).

Alternator was a refurbished one so came with only 3 month guarantee. I will have to take it out and open and clean it. Also checked rightnow the alternator belt is running but it seems alt is not charging the battery as red light still on. Do not think will have to take out the CV shaft Taking out the air filter box should get it going without needing to raise the car on the hoist. Hope to luck out on this one. Will keep posted. Thanks!

Got the alternator out, it was pretty black as a result of oil leak which could be seen on the copper coils. Anyways tried to open it up but seemed little tricky. If brushes or regulator were gone then it could have cost good $50 so due to lack of time, just went ahead and got a rebuilt one for $100 including taxes. Installed it and no red battery light so will be ok driving tommorrow. Cheers!
