98 V6 EX Coupe idle speed bouncing
98 V6 EX Coupe
Pristine car w 142k miles.
Today - raining for past 8 hours - drove car and noticed tach was hovering at around 1300 at a stop sign.
Seems that the idle speed kick down was not happening. AC on/off - defrost on/off - made no difference.
Came home 40 minutes later, parked the car, idle speed went haywire - surging/revving from 1000 - 1800 rpm about 6 times , then check engine light came on and idle speed settled at 700.
What is this?
Anyone have this happen before?
How do I read for codes on this car?
Would cleaning the Idle Air Control Valve help this problem?

Re: 98 V6 EX Coupe idle speed bouncing
I have a 94 accord ex coupe I4 and a similar thing has happened to me a few times. while idling the idle speed will bounce between 1000 - 1800 rpms usually after driving for a while. (it does not generally happen unless the car is warmed up and only when idling.) my check engine light doesnt come on though and it goes away after driving. (revving the engine does not seem to help)
I am still searching for a cause to this problem and will let you know if i can figure it out. I know our engines are not the same but it could be the same problem.

your idle air control valve (called rotary valve by Honda) usually causes this... I just dealt with this in my 215K EX '99. I soaked the valve assembly in laquer thinner and cleaned it all well and viola...problem solved. However, this does not cause a check light to come on usually so after cleaning yours, if the problem persists, then you should look into the MAP sensor that is located on your throttle body...that may be the culprit.

Re: 98 V6 EX Coupe idle speed bouncing
this diagram is for a 94 but it might help.
i believe that bcd7977 is talking about assembly 14 in this diagram when refering to the valve assembly and i know the map sensor is part 21.
pm me if you want the site i got this diagram from. it is from the honda dealer estore. they will have ones for your year also.

actually on this diagram, part # 19 is the rotary ( or IACV)...you should take this off and pay attention to the three hoses attached( 2 of them are for coolant and will leak a bit but not much). remove the electronic part of the assembly leaving only the metal part. you will see that inside it is covered in black carbon deposit...just soak and clean this stuff and it usually makes them operate new again...might as well pull off the whole intake, clean it all well and throw on a Hondata spacer gasket....
