93 Accord Transmission Downshift Issue

93 Accord Transmission Downshift Issue
I have a 1993 Honda Accord LX that I recently purchased that is having an automatic transmission issue that I need a little guidance with. I purchased the car a few weeks back after it had been sitting for a couple of years. The former owner drove the car until the brakes were completely worn out and parked it. I had the brakes repaired along with a new fuel pump, timing chain, and gas tank.
Now for the problem. I drove it a short distance with no issues and then the transmission would not shift past second gear and the D4 light stayed on. After some reasearch I determined the TCM may be bad and sure enough, when I removed the unit and opened it, there were capacitors that were leaking and black colored resistors. I replaced the TCM and that corrected the issue...to an extent. Now, the car will drive through all the forward gears but when you stop, it will not downshift. It acts as if it is in neutral no matter what gear I put it in. I turn the engine off and wait 15 seconds and when I re-start, the transmission will go into gear normally. I thought I may have a bad solenoid so I replaced both with units that I tested and know to work but no luck.
Does anyone have any idea what could cause the transmission not to downshift?

Re: 93 Accord Transmission Downshift Issue
I'm having similar issues shifting up through the D's like U had in my 1992 Accord LX, but am only now working on it. I can catch up to 3rd, but that gives me a max speed of 60 mph on the interstate at 25K rpm's. D4 stays lit on me the entire time, but I am able to manually drop it into D1 or 2 for take-off. I will follow Ur route about replacing the TCM & see if it does the same thing as Urs is doing. In the meantime, if U happen upon Ur answer before I post back, please send me a message & let me know.

I'm a Toyota Master Tech, but in my garage is this old 1993 Honda Accord that
has about the same issues as your Honda. I'm pulling the computer at this time to examine it for damage. I'll post back to you if I think I have useful info!

Assuming you double checked the downshift cable, perhaps it is the new TCU. If you didn't pitch the old one, it is very easy to repair. I did it in an hour or so with no prior solder experience. Then you'd have a spare anyway.
