Default 93 Accord H22 Swap. Has power, no start, no click

Hey guys,

Looking for some help trouble shooting an issue that just popped up with my car. It is a 93 accord EX with an H22/M2B4, auto to manual swap. Ran perfect since we did the swap in 2011.

I havent been driving the car much and my battery drained itself to the point of not holding a charge. I had put a charger on it a few times and used the "engine start" mode and got it running, but it wouldnt hold a good charge. So I went out yesterday and bought a brand new battery. Installed it (relocated to trunk in 2011) and couldnt get the car to start. Radio, Dash lights, fuel pump, etc. all come on. 3rd turn of the key and I get nothing except a small pop through the speakers. No click from anywhere else.

I replaced both battery terminals and used dielectric grease. Cleaned my main battery ground and used the grease. Cleaned my tranny/chassis ground and used the grease. Cleaned my motor mount/valve cover ground and used the grease. Tapped the starter, no change. Battery fuse is good. Ignition fuse is good. ECU fuse is good. Starter signal fuse is good.

I did just drop my steering column to the floor and swap my dash and the car fired up before that. Wondering if I may have shook something loose.

I don't have a neutral safety switch since the car was auto. I will be checking the wiring around where the auto shifter was that I had to jump to get the car started when we did the swap.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance

You can do a quick test and see what happens when you fire the starter directly from the battery. I have seen that issue with my car on and off since I got it. When I got my accord there was a switch wired up to start the car. Double check the harness between the ignition switch and under dash fuse box. Mine was horrible due to some half assed alarm installs. I finally ended up replacing the harness earlier this year.

The ignition switch itself could be an issue, the contacts wear or get corroded and don't make good contact.

Thanks for the link.

Just checked the neutral safety switch and it's working the way it should. Looking like the ignition switch or the starter.

Just checked and I have power to the starter, but no power to the solenoid when the key is turned.

Aftermarket alarm?

Is the switch on the clutch pedal working - note there are two, one for the cruise control (lower) and one for the starter/inhibitor (upper). There is a plastic "stopper" that can break and not allow the inhibitor switch to "close", thus no power to the starter solenoid.

I have a 90 ef sedan with that same problem.....got power in the car, but nothing at the starter when I turn the key.......I hooked up a toggle and problem was solved......plus, it's a good theft deterrent.

Thanks for the response. I actually got it last night and wanted to post up so I could help anyone in the future diagnose their issue.

Yes the car has an aftermarket alarm that was tied into the ignition switch. I am guessing this led to some of my issues. I tested the backside of the ignition switch harness where it enters the fuse box (black white wire). Got 12v on 1st click and 2nd click of the key, on start up, it dropped to 0v. Swapped the ignition switch out and it fired right up.

I originally thought it could be the neutral safety switch. The car is swapped auto to manual so I had to jump a few of the wires in the big auto shifter harness. Tested those and they were getting power so I ruled that out. I do not have a switch on the clutch since the harness in the car is for an auto.

Thanks for the help and hopefully this thread will help others in the future.

I really believe that these alarms are designed to fail after a set amount of time so that you have to buy another one. It makes no sense for them to simply fail to work as this is a regular occurrence here and I have seen it happen to myself. Mine was a Viper alarm and they tend to be Viper alarms. Which one was installed in your car ?

It was a Hornet by DEI. I think they are affiliated with Viper, correct me if I'm wrong.

I had the alarm unplugged and the brain out of the car and the car still wouldnt start.

I believe you are right. I will never buy any alarm by Viper or DEI. Hopefully others do the same.
