Sounds kinda funny but first thing to check is your hands after gassing up. Second would be leaky fuel injectors.

Check these items:

- fuel lines that run from the fuel tank to the engine bay underneath the car (there are 3 lines - one vent line, one return line, and one feed line)
- flexible line that runs from the fuel pump to the feed line
- the "extension" piece which runs from the top side of the tank to the vent and return lines
- filler neck
- tank
- fuel injector seals on both the intake manifold and the fuel rail
- fittings on the fuel filter
- fuel pressure regulator O-ring and return hose
- the EVAP canister in the engine bay

The charcoal canister may not be purging correctly. The canister is supposed to draw fresh air in from the bottom vent hose when the car is at cruise speed. This keeps the canister from getting fuel saturated. Check the charcaol canister and associated hoses. A quick test you can perform to verify this is or isnt the source. blockoff the purge vent hose at the bottom of the canister with vise-grips, remove the gas cap and go for a test drive to verify.

The evap canister he is talking about is a charcoal canister that is part of the evaporative emissions control system. Rather than vent vapors from the fuel tank into the atmosphere, they are vented and stored in a canister of activated charcoal in the engine bay, until such time as the ECU decides they can be used in the combustion process.

At this point fresh air is drawn into the canister, and the fuel vapors are vented into the intake manifold and combusted. It will be up near the firewall passenger side, and there is a hose connecting it to the intake manifold.

The fuel lines run under the car outside of the passenger compartment.
My guess is that you have a leak somewhere in the engine bay and that the fuel vapors are pulled in by the ventilation system. To test this you could try switching the ventilation to 'recirculation' and then drive the car with a rear window slightly opened to allow fresh air to enter.

Pinch off the vent hose with vise grips or similar. Remove the gas cap and go for a test drive. The vent hose is the hose on the bottom of the canister. This will help you to confirm whether is is or isnt the canister as the source of the fuel smell.

I'm betting on a rusted fuel line connection, like where the lines run above the rear driver-side wheel. Fumes will work their way into the cabin - especially if you drive with the window open.
