I recently had my 10,500 mile service done and now with under 12,00omiles on the car, my check engine light has come on. Any ideas about why? They want me to bring it back in and possibly pay more.

The gas cap is on securely...I read that this might be the cause of the problem but not in this case.

Is there some reason your car is not covered under factory warranty? Unless you have altered the car in some way it should be covered under warranty still.

Silly question but have you changed the oil? Old oil will cause that light to come on and you have to manually reset it when the oild change is finished.

I don't remember the button you hold down to turn off the check engine light but it is something pretty simple like holding down the odometer button in while turning on the car. Any oil change shop should be able to tell you what the procedure is.

If its a 2003, take it in for free the warranty should still be good.

With only 12k on the vehicle, the vehicle is covered by 3/36k warr. Things I always tend to see when a vehicle is brought in for service is the gas cap is tightened properly. If there are abnormal pressures in the tank, the purge cansiter will cause the MEL light to come on. Unfortantly, the check engine light will stay on until its reset. I doubt its nothing serious.
