Default 2002 instrument cluster gauges all went out at once -- wonky

Hi. This is my first post. I'm pretty new to hondas but have been driving and wrenching on vw and mercedes diesels for the last 15 years. Some friends and family have hondas and occassionally they ask me to look at them. Today i went to my friends 2002 4 door accord and all the instrument gauges quit working on him at once and the cluster says "Error" under the trip meter.

Anyone seen this? We googled and didn't find anything . I founds something about a self diagnosis for the instruments but didn't get details. I was just googling on my phone.

The lights work behind the gauges but the tach, speedo, fuel gauge, temp gauge, everything with needles doesn't move. The only needle that moves is the speedo and it will just move on its own with the car off and key out , it just goes from zero to 100 and back down to zero every few seconds. Is it trying to tell us something ? The story behind this is he left the key on while he was doing something else and when he came back and started it, none of the gauges worked.

I scanned it with my computer and had no cluster related codes, just an o2s and a few tcs and abs. I cleared the codes and drove it and they all went away. It drives fine but with a small hesitation initially when it is cold, like 1 or two times as you are driving down the road but then quits when warm. Later on idling it threw some misfire codes in 5 of the 6 cylinders. He's replacing the sparkplugs anyway as its due for a tuneup.

Thanks for any help. Aside from getting the manual and wiring diagrams I'm not sure what to do.

Cheers

Driver's side Fuse No. 9 (7.5A) may be blown.

Thanks! We'll give it a try. I checked all the fuses with a ohm meter but it may be still being wonky.

That fuse didn't help. He's going to take it to the mechanic Monday.

Do we know "what he was doing" while the key was on?
