2000 Accord EX V6 intermittent hot start issue
Hi all,
I'm having an intermittent issue where my 2000 Accord EX V6 (185k miles) will start, but then quickly lose RPMs and die, when it has been parked for a short time (<30 minutes) after driving for a while and getting the engine hot. I've been noticing this for a little over a week. The weather in my area is currently cold, in the 40s and 50s. The battery is fairly new and the dashboard lights+other electronics always work fine.
Sometimes it starts up hot without an issue - but when this issue does happen, it is only when the car is hot. It never happens when the car has been parked overnight or for a few hours.
Sometimes this is accompanied by a somewhat violent, audible vibration/shaking from the engine lasting for several seconds.
I've always been able to get the car started within a few minutes or less by just trying again a few times or holding down the gas pedal. One time the gas pedal thing didn't work and I got a CEL with the following misfire codes afterward:
P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0306, P1399
Car always runs fine once it is started. I'm aware of no other issues aside from worn motor mounts. Any help figuring out where the problem is would be appreciated!

Re: 2000 Accord EX V6 intermittent hot start issue
You can do a search for "heat soak" or "vapor lock", many of the early 6th gen V6's had this issue. Shows up more in the winter when they are selling winter blend gas.
The dealer will replace the FPR and update/replace the PCM and hope the issue goes away......after taking a lot of your money.
Some have reported luck with replacing the thermostat with a new OE stat?
Others have gone as far as replacing the fuel rails and that from an Ody

Re: 2000 Accord EX V6 intermittent hot start issue
Note; these are not MFI relay symptoms. For background, mine has been doing this for @ 1 1/2 yrs only once every 6 months or so. (145K garage kept mi) Yesterday OS temp 55deg w/sun. 2 short trips and re-starts and then no run w/all the symp. described in this thread. 1st time w/MIL ilum.....misc cyl misfire codes.
1 Scan Chk
2 Look @ FreezeFrame data
3 Look @ present Data
What would you look for w/an obvious Heat Soak or Hot Start Issue?
Closed Loop? yes Eng Temp (ECT sensor) 202f IAT sensor 242f really? Remember this is "when it screwed-up data"
Take a laser temp measurement @ the base of each of these sensors.
This test was done after driving the veh to work, getting the shop going and then pulling the car in warm.
ECT data-stream 142deg f Actual 140 deg f
IAT data-stream 212degf Actual 116 deg f
I like to replace ECT's aprox 100k mi on my personal vehicles due to "in accurate readings" affecting Air/Fuel ratio's...read "gas mileage" We have had boatloads of 90-02 Honda's w/this type of "Sensor out of parameter, but w/in design operational range"...hence NO MIL! Going to bang in a new NTC OEM IAT sensor and we'll see.

Re: 2000 Accord EX V6 intermittent hot start issue
Installed a new IAT sensor ( oem...38.5 second job) Eng temp 72deg f Hooked up scanner...accessed live data....had my driver move out while I monitored readings for 1 ECT volts and temp 2 IAC volts and temp. During the test we drove slow, med and Hwy spds as well as stopping 2 times for 10 min or so to monitor heat soak. Not much sun..but who needs it ...max IAC temp @192 degrees eng H2o temp was 82deg F! note temps in prev post Am not sure how PCM processes the data from IAC, but I THINK I SOLVED OUR PROBLEM!
