Icon2 1996 Honda Accord transmission slipping when cold and setting CEL

Hello,

I own a 1996 Honda Accord (4cyl) with automatic transmission. I picked it up with a badly slipping transmission. After cycling Honda ATF (expensive) through it a few times I've ended up with an 'improved' situation, but one that still seems to indicate a transmission, but I'm looking for any ideas.

Symtoms: When cold it starts and makes a load "whirrring" noise. After it warms up the whirring noise deminishes, but it still has trouble shifting to any gear and will revvv quite high sometimes. Usually, even after it warms up and starts shifting "better" it has set a CEL light by then.

Process: After a CEL is set and the car is warm, I unhook the battery for a few seconds which clears the light and the car shifts like a dream. The codes pulled previously are "P0715" and "P740". Also, even during good shifting it will set the CEL after a lot of highway driving (lockout not working?).

What I've done: Due to the above codes, and the "dirtiness" (lot of metal on magnet) of the transmission fluid when I got the car, a Honda mechanic suggested I pull the solenoids and check screens for blockage: I did and they were clear. He recommended I NOT run an additive.

Based on this scenario, any suggestions?

Currently I'm keeping my eyes open for a donor car, so I would appreciate suggestions on "what I got" and on "what I'm looking for".

Ideas?:

Any "last resort" additives you might recommend for a Honda automatic transmission in this condition to improve driveability?
Any additional ideas to troubleshoot the problem, if you think it is something besides a bad transmission?
Any warning, or suggestions on finding a used transmission?

Thank you,
Charles

My friend you can stick a fork in that trans...... its done. If you have metal "chunks" as you describe on the magnet on your trans then its safe to say it needs a transmission, I would recommend you not spend another dime on that trans and find a used one to put in it.

Old thread, but just an update. Took your advice Mustang, and stuck a fork in it. Sold the car and came out a few dollars ahead. Found a dealer who already had a donor car and he scooped it up.
