Icon3 1996 distributor shaft has no screw hole... advice needed.

Hello everyone I have searched and searched and I haven't found anyone with the issue I am having so I am hoping someone can help me.

Car and distributor info:
I have a 1996 Honda accord LX Wagon 4 cylinder with the non v-tech f22b2 engine. I was having an issue with the distributor so I went to replace the cap and rotor. It has a Tec distributor which is clearly labeled TD76 which is a richport technolgy distributor and is compatible with the car.

The Issue:
When I went to change the distributor rotor I noticed there was no threaded hole in the distributor shaft to secure the rotor button to. When I put the replacement rotor on it had some play in it which I am assuming is not acceptable. I went back to the auto-parts store and looked at all of the brands they had there and all of them required a screw to secure the distributor rotor onto the shaft and I tried a different one and it still had play in it. After looking for a distributor that didn't require a screw I noticed that the older 1991-1993 compatible rotor buttons didn't require a screw to secure them to the shaft and where a tighter fit.

Questions:
Has anyone ever encountered a 96 TEC distributor without a screw hole in the shaft? Should I put a 91-93 compatible rotor on with a 96 cap? Or should I put a 91-93 compatible rotor and cap on it? Its so weird because the damn distributor is clearly labeled td76 and the 91-93 compatible distributors are td52. I'm afraid if I put the 96 rotor on that engine vibration will cause issues without the screw and it having play in it.

I thank you for any help in advance... feel free to lay it on me if I'm missing anything obvious.

You might be able to use the 92-93 cap but you can't use the 90-91 cap. They also use different rotors but it would appear they both use a screwless one. I would say go to the autoparts store and test out a 92-93 cap and rotor and see how they fit.

Okay thanks holmesnmanny for the quick reply. Ill try that and I guess if all else fails I have an extra 94-97 ignition control module and I can go to the junk yard to find a 94-97 distributor casing and piece one together for cheap. I considered just getting an entirely new distributor until I realized they are 300+ dollars.

You won't be able to use a 94-95 distributor as it's different, only a 96-97 will work.

Okay so I got the 92-93 rotor and fortunately I didn't need to get a new cap in addition. I buy Import Direct parts and the rotor caps where compatible with 92-93 and 94-97 accords. The rotor fit perfect and there was zero play in it.

When in the distributor I noticed there was some cheap oem replacement ignition control module that had some char marks on it so I went ahead and replaced that with an import direct part. I then checked the ignition coil and realized that it was a crappy cheap oem replacement too so I decided to replace that as well.

I can't believe the difference in how the car drives it is like night and day now. The idle smoothed out, it no longer surges on the highway, the tachometer acts differently and seems more on par, and the pick up of the car is impeccable. The total cost of the parts was right around 100 dollars.

Note to self: when purchasing a car check all of the parts to make sure their aren't any cheap replacement parts hiding anywhere.

Thanks holmesmanny for the advice, I probably would have spent a lot more getting a distributor housing from the junk yard and rebuilding it if it where not for you.
