1992 accord wont start on full tank
Hi all. New owner of a 1992 accord. Bought it 5 days ago with it's purpose to be the reliable car. Ha! It has 142k miles on it and it ran great the night we bought it. Oil looked good, everything seemed fine...
I will list specifics. I am pretty much hoping someone can give me hope that it is not a blown head gasket.
-Fill up the tank the next morning and it won't start. got a jump which didn't do much but after giving it some gas it was fine. (when not starting it sounded like it would be half way turning over if that makes sense. Sorry, I don't know much about cars.)
-replaced fuel filter that looked like it hadn't ever been replaced before.
-drove the car a while the next day and filled up the tank and it won't start and makes same sound as before.
-left it to sit for 45min or so and got a jump again and it is fine, but drove it a mile down the road and it stalls when we try to leave parking lot
-get it started again, but now it is overheating. Wechecked the oil and it looks thin. Sortof like cofee to me (husband says chocolate milk, but I have googled that and didn't like the results) Drive it home stopping a few times to give it a rest since we hit stop and go traffic so it was overheating.
The thing I am most curious about is why it was not overheating before we put in a new fuel filter, and why in the world it has only given us problems on a FULL tank?
Gas cap is completely closed, btw. Thanks for any advice y'all can give.
ETA: Husband also says that the D4 light is now blinking???

Yes, off and on. We have not checked it out yet. Has a rough idle, but I am pretty sure my husband has checked the spark plugs already.
Sorry, I am having to be the poster since he is at work.
The only reason we have not checked it is because that would require driving it to a mechanic. :/ I think my husbands buddy has the computer for it, but not sure.

Well it could be a number of things. Get the CEL's checked and then look up the codes.
Your EGR valve and whatnot may also need to be cleaned up some.

ok. You got to stop throwing parts at the car before knowing what exactly is wrong. Once you figure out the problem fix it then throw parts at it for maintenance sake.
1) Always check the code. The computer will speak to you.
2) There are many things you need to notice when you have a no start. When you crank does it turn over but won't start? It seems like this what you have. Or does it not turn over, click and no start? Be specific as we don't see your car.
3) I don't know why people keep blaming the fuel filter but if the car drives fine other times then it's not a clogged fuel filter. Though replacing this part will help prevent problem in the future as it is a part of maintenance.
4) Coffee in the engine is never good. You may have coolant in the engine. This is signs of a blown head gasket. When the car does run, at warmed up, does it shoot out white smoke? Wait until the car is cool, take the radiator cap off to check for oil in the coolant.
5) Clean the throttle body, if that is stuck you might have regular stalling and a no start some times as it stuck.
6) Check the fast idle valve to make sure that is it screw all the way down and not over tighten when you screw it down.
7) Idle Air control valve, if it is dirty then some time it turns over but won't stay started and the engine turns off if your foot is not on the gas pedal.
8) How are the spark plugs. Look at them for signs of blown head gasket as well.
9) Timing, if it's off you won't have a start.
10) Check coolant level. Honda's idle is dependent on this.
11) Never rule out the main relay in this car. With the radio off, turn the ignition key to on without starting and listen to the fuel pump priming. It's like a high pitch humming noise coming from the rear.
It's always a good idea to get a maintenance list from the previous owner and when buying a used car, always check the fluids, they tell you the maintenance status of the car. Replace all fluids for peace of mind. For Hondas, power steering, and transmission, stick with Honda's brand only.
Good luck, post back to see what you find.

Yes, turns over, but no start. A friend said it may be fuel filter so we swapped it out to see.

The fuel pump does turn on. We can hear it. Does that rule out the main relay?

Thanks for all of your suggestions. Will be showing them to the husband tonight. Thanks!

sas6709 go to this webpage. http://techauto.tripod.com/ this will get you started on diagnosing the cars issues without having to take it to a mechanic.
Trouble codes can be checked by jumping the two wire blue connector that is tucked away under the dash near the kick panel on the right side. http://techauto.awardspace.com/ecu.html
Do not disconnect the battery or you will lose the trouble codes.
http://techauto.awardspace.com/transmission.html has info on the transmission trouble codes. Same procedure as checking the ECU codes.

Re: 1992 accord wont start on full tank
Let's take it one step at a time. Let's check the code first. If you are lucky, only one code shows up. It's the multiple codes that could be a headache but from my experience they are usually all related. The first code is the usually the most important that might fix other codes after. Check back with your results and we could help you more. I only have been working on car for 4 years so not much experience compare to others here but I always have to have a scientific explanation.
As for your friend who advised you to replace the fuel filter, well if it's clogged it won't run like you mentioned when it does start. Though I won't suspect it but I would replace it for maintenance.
Take your time and diagnose it yourself as with the bad economy, bad mechanics are every where. Desperation time. I got cheated or attempt to be cheated so many times, that I am always suspecting some thing.
SUPER IMPORTANT. Sorry for shouting. Timing belt. Check, if you could with the previous owner. If the timing belt has been replaced and water pump. At that mileage, it should have been done, if not, do it asap. Important stuff.
