1991 Accord speed indicator
First S green light came on blinking
Second orange "check engine " light illuminated
Third , the speed indicator needle began to oscillate
Fourth, the speed indicator shows zero
Car appears to run fine.
Any ideas, recommendations?

Re: 1991 Accord speed indicator (janelectric)
Make sure the problem is the speed sensor. Check the ECU code and it should be 17. To check the code, check http://www.c-speedracing.com/faq/06.php
If so, I'm having the same problem in the same car. I bought a new speed sensor on eBay for $23.95 but I haven't installed in yet.
In fact, I'm having trouble finding where it goes. It's embarassing because I just put this tranny in about a year ago and I thought I remembered how the speed sensor apparatus was set up. Any tips on installing new speed sensors?

Ussually if the intake isnt in the way it is easier to reach. but it depends on if you got the whole unit with the gear or just the sensor. either one its a few 10 mm bolts that hole it on.
I have on for sale of an f22 tranny if needed.

Re: 1991 Accord speed indicator (kulrevon)
I finally got around to replacing my speed sensor. It's not too bad if you know what to do (which I didn't)
Here's how I replaced the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) in my 1991 Honda Accord LX:
0. Disconnect battery.
1. Remove the air intake.
2. Remove the two 12mm bolts that hold the rearmost transmission cable bracket. You don't have to disconnect the cable (although it wouldn't hurt) but disconnect the bracket so you can move it slightly out of the way and it gives you much easier access to one of the VSS bolts. This is the step that will save you much time and energy.
3. Remove the two 10mm bolts that hold the VSS in. One of the bolts is also holding a bracket that the 3-pin cable hooks onto.
4. Disconnect the 3-pin cable from the bracket and the cable that it plugs into.
5. Remove the VSS and the little pin that sticks out the bottom (I don't know what it's called.)
6. Put the new little pin into the hole on the tranny and install the VSS over it.
7. Rebolt the VSS, transmission cables, and air intake. Reconnect battery.
I hope this helps someone.

Re: 1991 Accord speed indicator (the heep)
Follow-up:
Replacing my speed sensor was the greatest thing I've done since I've owned this car. Not only does the speedometer work, but my idle speed seems to have raised by about 200rpm (thus solving my low idle problem) and for some reason, my cruise control works again.
I'm really surprised about the cruise control because it hasn't worked since I've owned the car and the speed sensor has only been out for a few months.

I have 2.0 carb. and the vss is -- when you stand next to the passenger, front tire -- look down the left side of the tranny. right under air intake pipe. I think it was the only thing there with wires connected. may be with 2 small pipes leading to it.
check this one out.

Re: 1991 Accord speed indicator (kulrevon)
I have the same problem here. I got it all out of the way but there isnt enough clearance around the bolt to get a 3/8" drive 10mm socket on it. I've applied pressure to the bracket to try and bend it as flat as possible still no luck.
I am going to try a 1/4" 10mm and see if that is a bit slimmer.

Re: 1991 Accord speed indicator (kulrevon)
My 3/8" drive fit over the 10mm bolts okay. Ghostyman's tip to unbolt the transmission cable bracket was a big help.
The hardest part for me was getting the 3-pin cable unplugged without breaking the female side. A small nail ended up doing the trick.

tried everything I could possibly think of.
Will take 10mm socket and slim it down a bit, and then see, what happens. Should work like this.
I just want to take it out to see, if everything is ok. Mine has intermittent speedo problem. One time works, another not. Couldn´t be bad connection, checked it. I think it could be because the car has been standing in garage for a while.
What comes in the two small pipes? oil, or cooling?

Re: 1991 Accord speed indicator
Mine has the connector on the bracket, seperate from the vss body, so there is a bracket coming along the body of the vss. bolted to the inner bolt. There is the problem. Bracket is too close to the bolt head.
