Default "Redline" Oil vs. Genuine Honda Oil

Just to clarify this if for the manual transmission not the engine. I have seen dyno sheets of 8hp gains using "Redline" 5w-30 engine oil compared to Castrol GTX 5w-30. Anyways... about two years ago i figured it would be a good idea to change the oil in my gearbox, I knew that "Redline" was a quality company for Oils. So I went to the local speed shop and payed $24 for 3 quarts of Redline 30wt oil. Drained out the old and filled it up with the new Redline. took it for a drive and grinded the **** out of 2nd and 3rd gear. so I called the Honda dealer and told them my story, they said to come down there and pick up some of the factory Genuine Honda Manual Transmission Oil so I did and put that in and now none of the gears have grinded since Oh well you live and you learn. Luckily I was able to return the redline cause the dude at the shop said just to put it back in the bottles and bring in the recipt. Sorry if I wasted anyones precious time

My 93 the manual actually specifies normal engine oil, they dont' recommend any "MTL" fluid. I guess that has since changed?

i think MTL was developed in the mid-later 90s, thats why older engines still show motor oil recommendations... but it seems midway thru the 5th gen accords they switched to recommending MTL... but the tranny's did not change, so MTL is probably backward compatible w/ older trannys, possibly 4th gens since u guys use F-series trannys as well

I've also heard that Honda MTL is almost identical to engine oil, with an additive package that's just slightly different. With synthetics becoming more popular and additives changing, you probably don't want to use anything that's too slippery for the synchros. My '95 Integra book calls for engine oil...
