Well, good question. There is a simple answer I got from some research. Back in some time between 1994 and 1996, Acura realized the sales of 2 door integras were great, but the 4 door sales in canada were horrible. We barely see 4 door tegs up here. So in 1997, Acura decided to trash the 4 door teg and get the Honda Domani and call it an Acura EL 1.6
Meanwhile, down south...the states had great sales on 4 door tegs, so they never bothered getting rid of it, thus making the EL a Canadian car only.
There's some MB4 history for you right there.

Yes, there was never a 2 door, Acura used the integra as the 2 door version and the RSX currently would be a 2 door model, even though we all know that's rediculous. The CSX comes with a K20 stock, 160 hp. Next year they're introducing a 200hp Si version of the CSX(won't be called Si however)

Yeah all the models are based on the 4 door civic chassis, if you look closely you see the resemblence on all models. The 97-00 front end and trunk is interchangeabe with civics. Many guys up here roll with civic hatches and civic coupes with EL front ends. Also seen some civic 4 doors with EL rear trunks. A popular mod seems to be the EL outter tail lights on a 96-98 civic, since they're all white on the bottom of the tail light, it makes the 4 door seem like a rear end of the 2 door 99-00 model.

Well, basically. The modern stereotype around here is "civic with leathers". Not a lot of truely well done, well modded ones since it's such a rare car to see around, but once u see a nice one, you'll fall in love instantly...

There's quite a few actually. There is one guy currently working on a type-R conversion on his EK hatch with a EL front end.
Here are some pics:
