Default Which rental car company has manual transmission cars?

I'm trying to teach someone how to drive 5-speed. Is there a rental car company out there that issues out manual transmission cars? A few minutes of Google searching revealed nothing.

She's pretty good now on flat roads, but is having trouble on hills. And to avoid wearing the clutch too much (from higher revving), a rental car might be a bit better for hill practice.

Any ideas?

I would imagine no normal rental company would have a manual car because that would cut down their potential market. I figure only an exotic car rental place would have a manual. can't hurt to call anyplace near you

I don't know my neighbors too well. We moved into the place about a year ago. Plus most of them all have automatics.

That's what I thought too. But I know of several instances where people have rented 5-speed cars.

Am I the only one who thinks it's a little bit fucked up to offer to teach somebody how to drive a manual, then going out and renting a car to teach them on?

i think the best way to learn how to drive stick...is to learn to drive a motorcycle.

you can probably rent one nearby, and they may have a little course or something to drive it on, get something really weak...like 50cc (a dirt bike), that has a clutch and a few gears.

cause once you grasp the concept of letting out the clutch while giving it gas...it's really easy to transfer that into what you're feet are doing.

If you have a rent-a-wreck in your area they usually have 5speed beaters that you can get for like 20 bucks a day.

really? i thought the switch was a sinch.

it's so much easier when you're letting out the clutch & doing the gas with your hands. and then it's just a short jump from doing that to doing it with your feet.

Once they get the concept of more gas less clutch or more clutch less gas they will be fine. Most people just don't understand, how many times you explain it. You can't describe it well, but once they experience it, it all comes together.

Thanks for all the suggestions....and flames

No, none of my friends/neighbors have beater manual cars. In fact, I've been since out of the car loop for a while now, so I don't really talk to many "car people."

I called several Rent-A-Wrecks and they only have automatics. They also do not know of any locations that do have manual transmission cars. Any more ideas?

I successfully taught this person on flat roads, but she is very worried about ruining her new car on hills. She was doing pretty much perfect driving on flat roads, and I'm convinced she will do just as well learning on hills, but she isn't comfortable.

What else j00 guys got?

She already has a car??? Just use that, its just a clutch and at most she might lose some life in it. But t hose things usually last fairly long anyways.

I was searching for a company too and spent a couple hours researching it because I needed to rent a car when I was in Canada. I wanted one simply for the hell of it. I never found a company that had one.

Yup, brand new 2005 Scion tC. Sharp lookin car. She was very worried using it in the first place, but she did great learning on flat roads/parking lots/side streets. I tried telling her that it would be okay on hills too, but I dunno.

I'll keep looking for rental cars.....and if you guys come across any, let me know.

What about driving schools? I heard that you can take a driving school that will teach you stick? But doesn't that cost like $200? More than a new clutch

i think you can rent one from budget (a manual mustang) but, I'm not sure. It really depends on location. I rented one from the budget by my house (just to play over a weeend )

Just called there. As of last year, all Budget cars/trucks are automatic. The last places were up in northen New Jersey, which is EXACTLY where I need to get one.

Dang. I learned how to drive manual when I picked up my car from the dealership. Hills and all.

It's just a Scion. It's not like she's trying to save wear on a Ferrari clutch or something.

yeah, I guess I shoulda included the fact that it was about two years ago...byeond budget, I don't think the other companies will rent manual cars specifically for that reason...Just tell her to scuk it up and use her scion. It'll be fine.

Have you tried every single random rental place in your area? I know Fox Rent a Car in CA used to have some beater *** 5 speed Daewoos and stuff, but they don't have any locations in NY/NJ.

If you already tried Ugly Duckling and every other ghetto rental place, I say you start going out for test drives at used car lots. They will usually let you stroll out with only a copy of your driver's license and take the car for a spin. Everytime I have test driven anything at a bigger place like Carmax, they come with you, but I have been to some Honda dealers where they let me go by myself in both new or used cars.

Just have her use her own car. It's not as bad on things as people say it is.

I know this. I told her many times. It was hard enough getting her to try on flat ground/parking lots. Within 30 minutes, she was driving like the average 5-speed driver. Just a little hestitation before starting.
