Default My New Employer wants me to work 7 straight days in Cali :(

This is my first week working for this company and they want me working mon-sunday. I told them this was not legal and they told me if I dont come in I will lose my job. Im guessing its time to contact a Lawyer but Im not sure if any violation was done according to cal labor laws.

How old are you?

I worked 15 days straight my last job when I started. You DO want money, right? Its not such a bad idea if you think about it...if you're currently unemployed its a huge boost of money, and then you can settle into your 30-40 hr week schedule.

they paying you per year? (full time)?

if your job description says odd hours or long hours then i dont see what your complaint is about.

they can do it and if you dont like it then look for another job ... telling a new employer that something they are asking is illegal and refusing to do it is a big red flag you dont want to raise when you just got hired ...

as long as they are paying you for your time just work, stop being such a *****. This is a horrible way to start a new job, youll omstlikely never make it past the 90 days.

I work 2:30 to 11:00 PM Daily.

I did some research and found this

California labor codes
http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-...0-558
Quote:
551. Every person employed in any occupation of labor is entitled
to one day's rest therefrom in seven.
552. No employer of labor shall cause his employees to work more
than six days in seven.

And from one of the IWC orders(mfg)
http://www.dir.ca.gov/Iwc/IWCArticle1.html

The provisions of Labor Code Sections 551 and 552 regarding one (1) day's rest in seven (7) shall not be construed to prevent an accumulation of days of rest when the nature of the employment reasonably requires the employee to work seven (7) or more consecutive days; provided, however, that in each calendar month, the employee shall receive the equivalent of one (1) day's rest in seven (7).

I'd hate to have you as one of my employees if i ever owned an establishment. You sound like one of those people who cry "laysuit" if you are asked to work 2 minutes after your clock out time.

You see this as some kind of cruel and unudual punishment, but you have no idea what has been placed before you. This is your opportunity to show your employer your commitment to whatever company you're at. You're guaranteed pay for your work time, so what is the big deal?

You should be so fortunate to even have a job.

I've logged in over 84 hours, working everyday since last Sunday. I'm working right on through until Thursday morning. I'll have logged over 130 hours in 11 days by then.

Very good.

I was gonna type that in after I typed my previous statement, but I got lazy and hoped someone else would fill it in.

Good job

I'm from Cali too. I remember working 14 hour days when I was 16, I didnt care as long as I was getting paid. This is the reason I have been able to advance very quickly in all the jobs I have had, I am more than willing to put in the extra time to get the job done. The best part is that when there is little work to do I am the first to leave, and no one ever says a peep.

If you like the job, it's not bad. If you don't like it, it sucks. With your back, you couldn't handle my job...sitting at a desk for ~8 hrs of the usual 12 hr shift. I've been behind my school work all week...and my errands have not been met.

Problem is, he probably already ruined that chance by asking if it was illegal to make him work that much. Shouldn't have said anything except, "Yes, sir!"
