Default How hard is it to drive a standup forklift like a Crown model?

I am going to have to learn how to drive a standup forklift for work. One of the Crown brand standup versions. How hard are these things to learn? I've got terrible co-cordination and am worried it'll be a huge hassle. Thanks guys. I'm open to any tips or ideas.

I've never driven one before, and it looks confusing. I have no rhythm at all, so I'm just curious is all. Didn't realize this would revoke my man card lol.

Can you drive a car? That requires co-ordination as well.

/thread

but srsly, you'll most likely watch a training video of some sorts and have a guy show you the ropes. Easy peasy

It's extremely easy. They have almost no turning radius, the turning wheel is pretty much at the very back of the ones I used to operate, making them very valuable for strictly warehouse use. In fact they were probably pretty much created for warehouse rack usage, IMHO.

Whatever you do DO NOT remove your foot of off the activator device /circular piece you put your foot on (I don't know the technical name).

The US needs to have seats on those things, I remember seeing one in an asian country they have seats and a radio.

Used to operate a Hyster model reach truck( stand up fork lift ) in my previous job. Extremely easy, could multi-task very easily between raising forks, manuevering, tilting, lifting...etc. We got a Crown in and it wasn't as easy due to having to use one joy stick for most of the functions. Just wasn't as intuitive, not hard just not as straight forward to use.

That footpad safety doubles as a brake if the throttle doesn't slow you down fast enough, I use it all the time to avoid hitting stuff.

I was a noob when I let my foot of off the pad and instantly the whole contraption came to stop and it thrust me into the windshield .

This

Just start slow and learn how it operates. Nothing worse then dropping a palette or smashing a coworker. I was extremely nervous the first few weeks since I was moving thousands of dollars worth of car parts. It was a part time college job and I can still remember just thinking if I destroy everything on the palette, it's probably worth around the amount I make in the entire year lol

drove one for like 6 months at my last job. just like anything else, practice makes perfect. its easy though, in the warehouse i was at there was a lot of up and down stuff b/c the pallets would be up high and on rolling shelves and sometimes the **** would be like 3-4 pallets deep. when i started out id have to pull up to the shelf and then raise the forks. once i got used to it i was raising the forks while doing 90 degree turns to pull up to the shelf to get the next pallet.

it looked intimidating to me when i wasnt riding one but it also looks like way more fun than a regular sit down with a steering wheel. as soon as one became available i was all over that bitch.

it's not too bad. You should be receiving theory and practical training plus testing before they let you loose. If not, they're violating all sorts of OSHA requirements. The only advice I have is don't get cocky, don't use them as toys, and don't run into anything.

I'm an instructor at work, but we have European sit-down models. Way more comfortable.

Can this be the official lift truck thread?

I rock the Hyster 36d at work whenever we load something in or out.

Was mildly nervous the first time but now cruise around like a boss

My only tip would be to look out for sprinkler heads indoors... forgot to mention that earlier. I haven't hit one, but I'm always hearing about it.

Since we're 1upping each other, I just thought I'd share the fact that I use one of these bad boys at my job whenever an engine or transmission is delivered.
