Default How do I make sure a check I recieved won't bounce?

I was written a check for a large ammount of money from a person who owes me.

Is there anyway that I can verify that he actually has funds in his account?

Or can I just cash the check?

Get a certified check. They don't bounce.

Take his check to HIS bank and cash it. If it bounces then sue him.

yep..
if you take it to his bank they will tell you on the spot that there is not enough money in the account to cover the check...
ask them about your options at that point.

Yup, cash it at HIS bank - they should give you the cash on the spot if he has the funds available.

I recently accepted a personal check from a H-T member in exchange for some CRX parts, I took his check to the same bank, even though I took it to a bank in NC and his bank was in CA they were able to pull up his account and see that the money was there.

If it is from some little city bank... don't take it.

In some cases you can go to the bank and see if the funds are available in that account.
Don't wait though just deposit it.

It would probably be in your best bet not to loan money to someone you have to wonder if they would bounce a check on you in the first place.

if I cash it at my bank and the check somehow bounces can they call me up and take my cash back?

I didn't really lend him the money, he took it from me.... I found out and now he's promising to pay me back as long as I don't goto the cops. I'm not even making him pay for everything that he took.

You can call up a bank also and enter the account number on the check & do the merchant verification. Just type the amount in & should tell you if the funds are available at that time.

Your bank probably won't credit you the money until the check clears. On the slim chance they do credit to you and the check bounces then yes - you are liable for that money and your bank can take it back.

Go to the cops.

One of my banks credits you the money on the spot. I deposited a birthday check from my aunt, then got the returned check letter in the mail, along with a notice that my account had been debited $50 (amount of the check). I don't know what would have happened if I had cashed it instead.

If you cash it then they pull the equivalent amount out of your checking account - and quite possibly charge you a $29 fee for this service.

The best part is that some banks can LEGALLY charge YOU for that - even though it wasn't your check or your fault that it bounced.

Drew - Who learned his lesson and now either deposits people's checks, or cashes then at the other person's bank

I'm convinced that banks are doing more and more to drive away business.

Went to withdraw some loot from Walkalloverya yesterday, and it was like pulling teeth. Their merger with First Onion has really messed **** up.

If it weren't for all the direct deposits/drafts I have set up against that account, I'd change banks. Credit unions own

Look on the check to see what Bank it is drawn on and go to one of the brances and cash it......if one is not close - deposit 'hold' it at your bank - make sure that you tell the teller that - then your bank will not deposit the $$$ until they get the money from the other bank.

just deposit it... that way their bank sends yoru account the $.. and then i'ts between him and his bank to settle the bounce and the discrepancies along with it. dont withdraw from it.. just deposit it all in ...wait two days and youll be all set.

Citizens Bank of NH

good for something.

You can legally take his *** to court... now you have the theft he did to you and the bad check... so let him know what the hell is up. Him writing that check knowing damn well it was gonna bounce is an admission of guilt... the guy is screwed.

Keep us updated!

the way i was explained this when it happened to me was..

if you deposit the entire check and dont take cash out, even if the check is bad, the money goes from their bank to your account and their bank is left to deal with them about the bad check...so pretty much:

bank 1 is their bank, bank 2 is yours... bank 1 pays bank 2 for the bounced check, the money goes into your account.. bank 1 deals with the dickwad that wrote you a bad check.

that's what i was explained when i took payment and the chit bounced. i'd look into it before you make a move.. or take him to court..
