Default Does canned food actually go bad?

I have a few things that have been in my pantry for a bit and had my heart set on chowin down (cream of mushroom, celery, chicken soup, tomato soup, etc). They all expired though ranging from a few months to like a year and a half. I always thought canned food was good for longer than that. Does it actually expire or is it like a best before date? Anybody take the risk of grubbin stuff past the date?

An expiry date is a measure for when x product will no longer be within the manufacturing company's established quality specifications. It doesn't necessarily mean it won't be fit for consumption. However, my advice is, eat at your own peril!

Yes it does go bad.

I helped out a friend who was cleaning out his parents pantry once and OMG it smelled so bad. The pantry only had canned food but the smell was so disgusting.

That would mean the smell came from the pantry itself or an open can...which would make it not be a canned food anymore.

OP expiration date I believe is technically the date in which the store cannot sell it anymore.

Nope everything was still in the original can. Nothing was open. I think the food just sat there so long it started to decompose.

take a bite and if you get sick... well, eat it anyway, cause you already got the squirts, might as well finish it.

if the can is at all dented or warped, expanded, or when you open it there is a gaseous release or some of the food squirts out, throw it away

if not, it should be OK to eat. over a long time there is a chemical breakdown so the food might taste different, but as long as it is sealed, bacteria cannot grow.

edit: the expiration date is there because after that date there might be a breakdown in nutrients that would cause the food to taste different. which is why its put there from the manufacturer
