Default Ca I trade a car in with expired inspection tags?

My gf's trusty reliable 2001 echo has inspection due next month, and the check engine light is on. She went to get an estimate, they wanted 1300 for whatever was wrong, the car books at about 2k so its not excactly wise to fix it. She wants a new car but I dont want her to rush out and get one. SHe brought up a good point, can you trade a car in with expired inspection?

In NJ, dealers that sell used cars are REQUIRED TO MAKE ANY REPAIRS THAT ARE NEEDED TO PASS INSPECTION for the new buyer. I actually sold cars for 6 months after I graduated college and NEVER once checked to see if inspection tags were up to date. Does anyone know for sure? Provide a link?

so basically she will get 500 dollars for it which will be figured into the final purchase of the car so she'll really get $0

Listen up! What you want to do is negotiate the whole deal without telling them you have a trade in. Once you have them as low as you can get them, then tell them you decided to trade in your g/f's car after all. That's the best way.
