Default Automatic Ford Taurus: bucking and hesitation from a stop

I have no idea about automatics, much less about a Ford Taurus. Now, I don't know what year it is or what kind of engine/transmission it has. My friend across the continent asked me for help, and I have no idea where to start

Apparently, sometimes, it bucks and hesitates when accelerating from a stop when it's at operating temperature ... at other times it just sits there and revs. Finally, to throw a curve ball, it works fine on occasion. Perhaps it's low on tranny fluid? Dirty MAP or AFM? I have no idea.

Any ideas (other than pushing it off of a cliff or setting it on fire) would be appreciated

Change out the tranx fluid and go from there. Could be as simple as that...could not be. But always try simple first.

sounds good ... do all autos have a dipstick to check the level? Is it supposed to be checked when running?

Yeah it should have one. The prodecure is turn the car on, shift through all the gears, then check fluid. Not sure about the car's overall operating temperature though.

I hate the exact same problem. Great car but the transmission went.

sounds like burnt clutch packs or a clogged main filter. you can drop the pan and change the filter fairly easily on these cars....

Sounds like the reason I got a new tranny on my accord, and sounds like the reason my uncle's taurus has not moved in 5 years.
