Default Using Freon Instead of Water in a Air/water Intercooler????

Just curious on this.

Freon is pretty damn cold. much colder than water. So you leave your A/C pump installed on the car or figure out another way to store the freon and pump it through the air/water intercooler wouldnt this keep the intake temps much lower than if it was coolant/water in there.

I know of a twin turbo Pantera that uses that setup. He uses the ac to cool the water and under boost the ems shuts off the ac.Its not much of a sleeper.

something like that could work with some custom fab. work, but u would need the whole ac system.. the air/water cooler would take the place of the evap core and u would need some type of expansion valve or orfice tube to make the freon do any cooling.. if u could find and small condensor for the front it could be done..

most cars cut the ac compressor off at w.o.t.
there was a setup like this for the stangs in the 90's but the gain from it isnt as great as the draw the compressor puts on the engine.

The problem with this is that it takes energy to pump the freon, and that AC pumps probably shouldn't be revved to 7-8k rpm. There's no free energy when it comes to components driven by the motor, there's actually always a loss. The other problem would be effeciency of the system, as well as capacity. You'd probably overload the AC system very quickly, as the condensor core can only shed so much heat. If you've ever ran a civic AC system on a 100 degree day and wished for more, try it with 200-240 degree air.

It would be okay for a run before you have to cruise around and let it cool down, as sitting in line at the strip probably wouldn't let it cool down enough. IMO you're probably much better off with spraying high-purity wood alcohol, ether, or similar volitile fluid to evaporate and cool the core down. That would be a much better solution that would also combat heat soak after a boosting hard. Standard caution like for nos/co2 spraying, it can alter the air/fuel mixture if vapors get sucked into the intake.

Would dry ice have a negative effect on the Hard lines running through the cooler its self? or one the water feed lines?
