Default Turbo Sizes - A/R Numbers?

Hey All,

I was wondering if anyone knows, or knows of any good resources, for finding more information on the differences between turbo sizes, and what those A/R numbers mean.

I am getting a Garret T3 turbo, and would like to know a little more about it.

basically, the higher the a/r, the later the spool/boost onset, and will make power more in the high rpm band.

So whats all this i always hear about T3's w/60 A/R? is that better, and if so, why? what will be the power range with a 48 vs 60?

AR=aspect ratio or Area/radius

To get the AR you divide the radius of the compressor housing by the smallest diameter of the inlet(ex) or outlet(comp) of the housing. On the ex side the full boost will move higher in the RPM range as you increase the AR size. On the comp side the larger AR's do not have to turn as fast to produce power.

I hope you have a flame proof suit because you are gonna need it when they start flaming the Civic pic you posted.

i suppose its too much to ask if u can estimate where the full boost would be on the 48 vs the 60?

There are a lot factors that affect when boost comes online: DP size, DP design, cat or no cat, muffler design, muffler size...

My current setup uses a 65mm DP with a N1 style 65mm exhaust on a 57T T04E/T3 AR.63 stage III and I get full boost by 3800rpm. An AR.48 would spool 300~500rpm faster but I would also lose atleast that much off of my topend too.

Hey, kinda ot. But when someone says that a turbo comes in many "trims" are they refering to the A/R numbers? Or something different?

I'm specifically interested in the different trims of the t3/4 turbo...

Trims is for the actual wheels either compressor or turbine wheels and A/R is the size of the housings. I have a 70 A/R Compessor housing with a Stage 3 trim Turbine wheel in an.82 A/R Turbine housing. Also I have a .63 A/R turbine housing and trying to decide which to use, the .63 will spool quicker but run out of breath sooner up top and vice versa with the .82. HTH

ok, i finally found out the details on the turbo i am possibly trading some stuff for:

Garrett T3 w/ .48 A/R and internal wastegate

Now i have a B16A3, whihc VTEC is at 5500 and redline is at 8200. All my power (or lack of it) is on the top end. Will such a small A/R work like crap with this engine? from what I am understanding from the posts here, the turbo will spool estimated somwheres around 3K-3500, when would this beat be outta breath? waaaay before my redline i assume?

I will have a 2.5 DP, race cat (read, hallowed out stock cat) and 2.5 thermal exhaust.

On a B16A a T3 Super 60 with an AR.63 will be ok but the smaller T3 that you mentioned will run out of juice in the low 7k rpm range.

are all T3 bolt patterns the same? lets say i was to get this T3, then when i had some more money down the road, i could get the T3 w/63 and it would bolt in place, right?

just do it right the first time....go with .63 stage 3, the diff in price between a .48 and .63 is not that much different anyhow, may even be the same...

with .48, you'll spool a lot faster, but you'll hate your self at the top end...
for 1.6 or 1.8, a .63 is perfect spooling machine, sacrifice a lil on the low end, but you'll be happy till the top...besides, you'll learn to place the RPM band at the right timing to where, you won;t feel a lag at all..
