Minimum CFM fan rating, rad almost entirely blocked
Hey guys, looking to purchase a slim fan for my upcoming SOHC-T build. I have an all aluminum half rad, right now running the stock fan and shroud with no issues.
But when I install the turbo kit I will be blocking a large part of the radiator with a large intercooler, possibly even turning the rad slightly sideways depending if i end up going backdoor, or keep the rad normal if I do it regular endtank style which will block pretty much the entire rad
How much CFM's is a minimum?
There seems to be a correlation between CFM's and the thickness of the fan, rating may also not be accurate. Im hoping to use the thinnest possible fan to get my results, but dont want to buy a poor quality unit or one that wont be enough.
Experienced suggestions?

if your able to get a small fan to work with oem shroud it would be kickass...
fan cfm, I would say 900cfm min
Everyone loves the spal 13" fan it's 1350cfm for $130ish
as for FMIC blocking air flow to radiator, it won't be an issue unless your going with a 3.5" core or something.

Well no matter what Im going to be fabricating a shroud out of sheet steel for whatever fan I buy, which now that I think of it will space the fan off of the radiator even more

Make a block off plate between the radiator and where the ac condenser used to be... this will force the air through the radiator

Yes^^. Direct air flow through the rad as much as possible because on the highway it will get hot.
IMO the only fan worth buying is the SPAL 13"

Zirgo or spal only way to go. 14" will take up about 95% surface area of the rad.
That being said natural airflow is most important. Don't listen to anyone that tells you otherwise. Natural airflow will keep it cool most of the time and the fans will keep t cool in traffic and when not moving. If you have to block off driver side to direct airflow to the rad and ou can also make an airdam to go under the front bumper to direct air too

^yup best way to do it.. the block off on the drivers side will make the most difference for sure... you'd be amazed how much air skips the radiator when you have nothing next to it

you can get 12-14" fans on ebay or amazon for 30-40 bucks that put out 1200+ CFM
I have a buddy running stock fan and single core rad on his built sohc making about 380-400whp and its working fine, it will get a little warm during 4th gear pulls but nothing major

could be possible but last 4-5 fans ive got off amazon for under 40$ each worked perfect for what ive used them for.

I wouldnt mind the overkill in cfm/loudness/price, Its getting a fan that pulls lots of cfm and is THIN that seems to be a problem. All the quality looking units seem to be atleast 3.25" thick

I recommend FAL http://www.summitracing.com/parts/flx-125
A good Shroud is important! If you do go with a Spal, I would put it on the Front of the Radiator IMO...

I know Ive seen a website that sold only thin rad fans. Was called like justfans or fansonly.com or something along those lines. I wanna believe it was marketed more towards imports. They sold there own brand of fans
Cant put my finger on the name though can anyone help me??

Recently went through this myself. I've tried the ebay fans that claim to move ungodly amounts of air. They don't plain and simple but then again I sort of figured they wouldn't considering the cheap price. They work fine in cooler weather granted but when it's real hot outside like 90F + they fail. I finally spent the money and put a 14" spal on there and wow what a difference. That thing will suck small animals through your radiator Well worth the money.

ya I remember a website that was only for fans I believe, they were quality made unit but were unbranded so the prices were good and the fans were reliable

They are expensive but it's one of those cases where you get what you paid for.
If you have space to build a nice fan shroud to ensure your fan will get air through the entire radiator I believe a lesser fan will get the job done but if you have clearance issues that completely prevent that such as I did then a SPAL was in order. A 14" spal just barely fits on the radiator and covers almost it's entire surface and with the shear volume of air it pulls you'll have no more cooling issues.
