low compression high boost or high compression low boost
just wondering what everyones opinion is if they would rather run low compression and high boost or high compression low boost. for example 8:1 and 12 pounds of boost or does 9:1 and 8 psi (pump gas of course)? just curious what everyone thinks. personally i would use low compression and high boost personally

Re: low compression high boost or high compression low boost (rb08)
Well if it is strictly a street car then a high cr and low boost would give you the most power while not boosting and still put a smile on your face when you wanted to get on it a bit.
If you were building a weekend warrior then screw drivability. Run low cr and boost the **** out of it.
Also I'm no turbo expert, but I'm pretty sure that you can run 12 psi and a 9:1 cr.

Re: (GSRswapandslow)
IMO, i prefer low cr wth more boost. dont go too low though, lowest i would go is 9.1.
it also kinda depends on what type of power you wanna make with what kinda motor.
ex. if your goal is 250 whp. with a GSR
i would stay with stock CR, and with say 7 psi you will easily get that with good tuning.
now say you went 9.1 CR, at 7 psi, i would guess you would be around 230 whp and it will also feel more sluggish than the stock CR.

My last car had a d16 with 9:1 and i boosted it to 18lbs on pump gas with pistons and rods. The car lagged like a bastard. It was fun as hell when the boost kicked in at 3600 rpm, but now im running 5 lbs on 10.5 to one with stock pistons and the car is soo much more streetable. No pain in the butt to get started and when it hits 3000 it starts kicking in. Im not sure how safe this is but, my egt says it ok. I'd say for most power go low cr and high boost but for more fun on the street, go high compression and low boost. The RSX type S has 11:1 and they have run like 10lbs on it with very good results. I'd love to try that car.

good call. why pick one when you can have high comp. & high boost?

Re: (turbod96ex)
I had this dilemna a while back I chose to go with 9.5:1 with moderate boost. I'm currently rebuilding but I was running 16 psi. I really would recommend high comp/low boost for street car. I chose to go with the happy medium becuase its a daily driver but I also turn up the boost for track nights and the occational dumbass that wants to test me. But I am also running a standalone. Low compression does allow a little margin for error.

i had the same question a while back as well, but found high compression+low boost to be the way to go
some good links in there too

lol, why would you bother with 8:1 compression if you're going to run 12 pounds of boost? You can do 12 pounds of boost on a 10:1 motor with pump gas.

Re: (turbod96ex)
turbod96ex,
my guess is if you would have "matched" a turbo to your 9:1 setup it would have been a lot more fun than raising the compression and lowering the boost.

Re: (MordecaiPSI)
i agree with the high boost low compression combo for one reason.... you can run lots of timing (like 32 degrees). it has been my experience (with turbo and NA combos) that less makes the engine less responsive. for example have you ever seen a nitrous pro modified car do a burnout? it can barely spin the tires because it has no timing. when they let the clutch out on the line, the engine comes alive because with all the nitrous that they are running they need almost no timing ( i think there running like 18 degress now).
