Help! Smoke!
Ok I have a problem with smoke on my freshly built d16. I haven't been able to properly identify the color its almost like a lighter gray. If I turn on the car it doesn't smoke at all but after a few minutes it begins to smoke and gets worst and worst. If I turn on the motor let it run for a minute (no smoke) and shut it off the and turn it back on a cloud of smoke comes out.
Its not coolant because I ain't loosing any and If I pull the plugs there is no coolant in the chamber. BUT when I do pull the plugs smoke does come out from them, smoke also comes out from the valve cover breather (there is fuel on top of the pistons and on plugs).
I have an aem wideband and reads above 15 on idle and about 13 with a load
It use to do it the second I turned it on but I added more fuel, and it stopped but will running to rich cause this, and wouldn't the smoke be black
I know it could be the turbo but if I pull the oil line it still does it and why does the same color smoke come out the plugs and breather...... is it blow by?
I checked the plugs no oil on them just lots of fuel
D16z6
eagle/vitara 75mm, hastings rings
O miles

Re: Help! Smoke!
The motor was built at a machine shop, the cylinder walls where honed. When I pull the plugs I dont see oil on top of the pistons and If i put something in there it comes out wet with fuel not oil though. The engine has no miles could that be the reason? rings not set

Re: Help! Smoke!
Yeah if it has no miles on it and is a fresh rebuild that could certainly be the problem. Depends on the rings and how it was honed, etc, but in general I wouldn't worry too much unless it's still smoking after 500miles.
Even after 10 or 20 miles the smoke will probably go down considerably. If there's something wrong, it'll get worse the more you drive it, instead of better. hehehehe...

Re: Help! Smoke!
I had that problem once. Machine shop didnt hone block right. Smoked like crazy. It didnt go away as I put some miles on it. Had to order new rings and rehone the walls. Worked prefectly after that

Re: Help! Smoke!
A properly built motor should not smoke "a lot." Rings are set by 50 miles, not 500. Does the smoke get better or worse as the car warms up? I went to hell and back trouble shooting my fresh motor that was smoking A LOT. It turned out the piston manufacturer sent me the wrong rings with my pistons. Pain in the ***!
