tried to seach and didnt find anything so ill just ask.

Got my turbo set up squared away on my little D16Y7-Y8 head, and well after a while i blew the head gasket, went and puller the head to replace it and the reason it blew was a head bolt was stripped right out of the block. So would you guys suggest helicoiling that one and checking the rest, or just tap them all out and go with a larger set of head studs? Right now due to money im leaning towards the Helicoil, but I really dont want this to happen again. Also, do you guys know of any links for a set of larger head bolts or the correct helicoil set i would need? I believe they are a 10X1.25 thread pitch but havent tested to make sure yet, My mechanic is out of town till this sunday so Im just looking for some past experiences to kinda help out my answer. Im only running 10psi on a T25 if that helps at all. Thanks.

Helicoil. They are rock solid used in aircraft absolutely dependable when installed correctly. No need to do anything else.

I would recommend heli-coil. I have 4 on my 2000 b16 motor right now. lol. I stripped my head 4 times in one day. And I used heli-coils to fix them. And they feel stronger than before.

The set for the head u need is 8x1.25.

Helicoil it. I had the EXACT same thing happen to me on my Y8.
I helicoiled it and then had another bolt pull out of the block on me, the same week. So I said F*ck it and drilled tapped all the head bolt holes. I'm using 10 Helicoils on my block and I continually beat the living christ out of it all the way to 6K in 5th. Helicoils work.

you need the 10mm 1.25 pitch helicoil pack.

I stripped the mounting hole on my unibody for the rear compensator arm...bad day. Helicoil is the ****, once you get over the fact that you are paying $50 for a tap and a little plastic piece, basically. If you are really cheap, like me, you can pay $50 for the tool and a couple coils, buy another pack of coils for like $15 and replace the ones you used and return the tool. Poor student resourcefulness...

Timeserts are better than helicoils and should be used in this instance...

I agree on the timeserts..much more expensive than helicoils, however.
Switching to head studs might help the rest of the threads also so you don't go thru this again.

Have you considered drilling and tapping the stock bolt hole deeper and using a longer head bolt or stud? Check and see if your block has plenty of meat beneath that hole and make sure you won't be drilling into anything *important*. (that last sentence sounded kinda nasty but I'm not sure why!?) Good luck with it.

Ok, ive talked to my shop and they said to go with helicoil, but i havent heard of time serts, any links to them?

i got rid of a gsr block becuz my local machine shops didn't want to heli-coil my head studs. actually, the block was already heli-coiled but i didn't know what type of thread it had in it.


the machine shops told me that it wasn't worth installing heli-coils becuz it would not be realiable on a turbo motor. i didn't want any problems so i sold the block. to be honest, i'm glad i sold it just to have a piece of mind. i know i would've worried about the heli-coiling not holding up while i'm racing.

Timeserts are tight.

Time serts or if you want they have Big Serts also, depending how bad it's stripped. Usually a regular time sert will do. Helicoil

Ok; that is good that your Pro shop say Helicoil. Reason is that it what they know and good at doing.

Go helicoil! My block has it w/ 0.0 problems!

hi mate . Recently had a bolt yield and break on a 4 cylinder bike engine hg bolt that is . M10 x 1.25 all bolts oiled . The bolt at heli went beyong yiekd point and broke . Any ideas ,? Most say they're good . Bolt still seems to go in ok but some shavings in there which I've blown out . I still need to have a better look on coils condition to rule out the heli gone bad . It's a 2.5d just ordered 3d as I think they may be better quality and will likeky fit ok obvs I'll check first thanks
