Default b16a2 turbo

i gotta 99 civic si b16a2 and i was planning on boosting it 14psi with internals except sleeves then sleeve it later before race season. ive read about all these ls/vtec motors with turbos, too. whats the advantage of a ls/vtec or should i stick to boostin my b16a2. i heard that when you get to boostin 20+ psi then the b16a2 will run with the ls/vtec. please help. if i stay with the b16a2 will i be losing out or overall is the ls/vtec a bunch of bullshit? i already got internals in my b16a2 and a lsd in my b16a2 tranny. thank you for the help.

theres so many variables to say if you will beat an ls/vtec, etc...i suggest you do alittle more turbo research before you worry about running 20psi....

well i keep hearing that the turbo b16a2 will do just as good and less problems than if i go with a turbo ls/vtec. i was just wondering what you guys think of the ls/vtec for a turbo set up. is it really a bunch of crap and a hand full of problems?

lsvtec turbo is good for bigger turbo and better spool up, because of it's .2 litre difference it helps spool time, and it got more torque than a b16.

boosting a b16 would be great, i wouldn't be boosting 14 psi though. most people on the boards do around 7-8 PSI until they can get fuel magament ignition, fuel inecjtors blah blah blah

and if the lsvtec was built right you shouldn't have any propblems with it, my friend has about 90k on it, it was built by another friend of ours. but since you have a b16 already in there, just stay with the b16. then when you resleeve it get bigger pistons. and bore it out if you wanted.

so lets say i sleeve my b16a2 with darton and all other internals in block, hbeam rods, 9:1 pistons, oversized valves, titan. retainers. how much can i boost? and if i get into this high of boost how different are these two motors gonna run besides the quicker boost of the ls/vtec? i mean what motor set up do you guys recommend if i wanna have at least a 12 sec daily driver? thank you for all the info. is that .2 litr gonna be a huge advantage?

I've said this before and I'll say it again. The difference for MOST people in a fully built b16 vs a fully built b18, ls/vtec, whatever, is tuning not the motor. Any of those motors will handle over 500whp, so its up to you to spend the money on large injectors, fuel management, and dyno time.

In my built b16, I run around a bar on pump gas and plan to run 27lbs next race season. That should put me over 500whp. What ls/vtec will beat that? One that is running 27lbs on a larger turbo. Solution? I could run a bigger turbo and squeeze, make 600whp.

If you do sleeve the b16, go up to 84.5mm. For a 12 second daily driver you can pick any motor, keep it bone stock, and turbo it.

you can do 12's without internals, etc...Im making 307whp, in a 2200lb car, should easily do mid 12's if i could get some traction...Stock engine.

alright this all sounds awesome. so i got a good motor thats capable of some major hp with high boost. and i already got the internals in the head and its ported and all that. so if i put some darton sleeves in my block, hbeam rods, 9:1 comp pistons and then slap a turbo on there with lets say 20 psi boost i can get this 2400 lb cvic si daily driver in the 12's easily!?!? now one more question, i have a used to4e turbo, should i get a t3/t4 or will this to4e work? thank you for all the help.

t04 will work, but go 9.5:1 and 84.5mm for sure to help it spool. In my car you can definitly tell the turbo is a little oversized. Floor it and it is peppy but you are just waiting for the turbo until 5k.

so why is everyone so in love with the ls/vtec if the same setup on a b16a2 will keep up with it? is it just over talked about

ls vtec has more torque throughout the powerband and is a cheap way for the ppl with no vtec motors to get vtec. IM guessing it could have the same horsepower but not the same torque.

If your goals are 12's and you already have piston's (what commpression are they?) then I would not sleeve. Save the Cash get a good engine management, injectors, fuel pump, and tune for about 15lbs. You don't have to run this amount of boost constantly if you get a boost controller. This will put your car in the 12's.

If you want a true street beast, go with the 83mil bore (gives you a chance to screw up) and compression around 9.2 to 1. Then you can really raise the boost. I do have to tell you though, once you have this motor work, it's not as easy as just turning the dial to make more boost. You need fuel management, larger injectors, fuel pump, guages, good tuning, Traction issues, Axles can snap. Basically what I'm saying is 20lbs of boost, done right, is not cheap.

Also if you list your complete set-up and what your budget is, this board can help you out tremendously.

i dont have all the turbo stuff yet. right now i got 9:1 comp pistons, stock rods for now but gonna get hbeam rods, oversized valves, crowere valve springs and titan. retainers, ported head and intake. and i have the chance to get a b18b block to make a ls/vtec but people say since i alrady got the b16a2 then just sleeve that to 83mm with either darton or ge and then if you get your tuning right which i know how to tune a trubo motor(bigger injectors and all that) then i can run 20+ psi boost. im just not sure if im really gonna be missing out on the ls/vtec since i have the chance to get one or is a bored and sleeved b16a2 gonna be just as good instead of going through all the headaches of a ls/vtec? im planning on getting a boost controller.

there are member's of this site w/ overbored b16a's on this board making 500+hp.

Like someone previously said, the difference between the 2 motors is going to be the quality of components you add.

BTW if you sleeve and go with the 83mm bore your pistons will be useless.

I would honestly budget everything you want, see how much it is, and see how it affects your wallet. I personally can't afford to sleeve my motor, so I'm going to run 10psi as safely as I can, because thats in my budget, and go from there. I think most people will agree with me 20 psi is not cheap, not saying you can't afford it, i have no clue about that. Just trying to give some insight. Good Luck on your project

Don't spend all your money on your engine...crazy horsepower in a car that is not setup for it is no fun to drive....Im only making 307whp and still have alot of money to spend on being able to actually put that power to ground.
