Gouge/crack in block???
So i tore down my b18b to rebuild for boost. Everything meausred perfectly within tolerance, not even .001 deck warpage. I was surprised in how good of condition it was in for 170000 miles until i saw this. This is the outside wall of cylinder #1. Right by the water pump entrance. If you look close it looks like it may have cracked all the way down, or is that a casting imperfection down there. Anyways, is this block trash or can i fix this? Is the crack you have pictured vertical in the block, or is there also a horizontal crack that travels toward the #2 sleeve ???

What looks like a gouge is vertical along the outer sleeve of cylinder #1. Right by the water pump outlet. What looks like either crack or casting marks coming off of the gouge are traveling horizontally. And there is a small one that looks like either a crack or casting mark rigt at the bottom where the coolant jacket meets the outer sleeve. Since this is all on the outer part of the sleeve is it really that big of a deal? The inner cylinder wall is perfectly fine. Im only lookin to make around 300 whp

Ill try to get a better picture of it tomorrow. I also found sand at the bottom of the coolant jackets. I bought the car with this motor and it ran incredibly well, especially for having 170,000 miles on it. The only reason i tore it apart is because I did a gsr swap with plans to build this motor for daily driven boost. The motor was showing no signs of damage, no leaking, no smoking, no overheating so im not sure what this could be from

that definitely looks like a casting flaw. I'd say it's totally fine.
the "sand" in the coolant jacket is probably just corrosion buildup. I've seen it in many many motors when the coolant is never drained or flushed. also totally normal. just flush it out, good to go.

yeah, flaws like that happen sometimes. and no, it won't cause any stress points. you could file it down, but I don't think it would make any difference. It's just the aluminum that encases the steel cylinder. the aluminum part is just there to locate the steel sleeve. the steel sleeve is the structure for cylinder pressure.
