Default CRX Parachute mount for 200+ MPH

Building a 10pt cage for a CRX. It went 179MPH in the texas mile in October and is currently the fastest Honda. Wouldnt go any faster cause the head studs stretched and blew a HG Looking to break 200MPH this time. Car is Single cam with Precision billet 6265 on 25PSI. Going to the Texas Mile in March with more power and better tires and better safety equipment.

Trying to figure out the best location of mounting the parachute bracket. We dont want the same thing to happen with the Lambo that got totalled. Anyone have links, pics, or advice? thanks

I'd probably worry about getting the rest of a roll cage in that thing before a chute

We are doing the parachute when we put the 10pt cage in. We are removing the current 6pt that is in there now and building the 10pt to nhra spec with chromoly. Right now with the 6pt. It is cert for the Texas mile up to 190mph. Thanks

Put it way up high. Hell, i'd put the tag line at the roof for that speed and that light of a car. Just think about it like this, the chute is what, 8' in diameter or so? It's not going to drag on the ground, so lets say the center of the chute is at least 5' off the ground. The further below the centerline of the chute the tag line is the more it's going to pull up on the back of the car.

correct me if I"m wrong but one problem with that lambo was that the parachute rope (or whatever that is called0 was way too short so the parachute got impacted by the turbulence behind the car. I don't see much downside other than increased strain on the rope to make sure the parachute is a ways away from the car when it opens.

You can also put some Alcon F1 brakes on the rex

Bigger brakes isn't going to help. The car was already sliding when braking. The car is too light to get traction. Did you see how low his parachute was mounted? I know way down there is no good but also didn't know where the sweet spot would be at

thanks Tony. The car has fiberglass hatch and lexan so we are thinking of having a bar come out of a hole through the lexan and have the parachute tag bar removable

I also don't think the rope length was the problem. They are sfi certified and come a certain length so it has passed several tests. That is unless he modified it, but why would anyone do that?

Tony has the right idea, aaron pulls the chute @ 160 all the time. Higher the better on a car as light as yours, and DO NOT ( drive into the chute) when you pull it, way to vilent for fwd cars with no weight in the back. The best advice we got was from Marty Ladwig, go through the traps, push in the clutch and " settle" the car down, start getting on the brakes lightly and pull the chute. That way the weight transfer has already started and does not "shock" the car. Also your car is light so get a smaller diameter chute !! Less weight = smaller chute = less violent on impact and more controllable !!

I dont think I would take advice from Marty as to how to pull the chute. I can remember a few parachute incidents that Marty had with the cobalt on the top end. In my personal opinion, driving in to the chute always felt better to me than slowing down and then pulling it. But the. Again that was in the cobalt at 2900 lbs and the crx at 2300. Maybe for cars lighter than that it might be better the other way.

+1

Even going 140 in a CRX is scary, I can only imagine that high of a speed for that long

This is how ours is mounted. I would agree with Tony, the higher the better. Driving through the chute always felt better to me to, I don't let the car unload at all.

Is there really that little of shut down.......for the need to pull the chute while your crossing the line ?

Yes there is that little room to stop. At 179 he had problems with stopping in time. Will be much worse at 200...

From what I have been told in the few chassis classes I've had, the anchor point of the chute should be at the same height as the center-of-gravity of the car...if you are able to figure out what that is.....generally in a v-8 application, that height is very close to the same height as the centerline of the camshaft from the ground.

Dont know if that helps at all or not...but regardless, that's some really good speed for a light car.....i'd prefer to push the clutch in and coast to a stop if there was enough room...lol
