Default Tow Vehicles: Problems, Complaints, and Compliments

List your experience with your tow vehicle. Please tell about your truck and trailer with approximate weights. Also give an idea about the gas mileage towing and not towing.

My past experience was with my 2004 F350 diesel and my 44ft gooseneck. The truck pulled the trailer with 2 cars pretty good and got about 8-9mpg while towing and 15-16 not towing. I had no trouble at all for the 1.5yr I owned it. Bought it new and sold it with 27k miles.

My last tow vehicle was an 05 Renegade with Mercedes diesel and Freedom trans. Pulled the same trailer/car config with no problem. 80mph uphill no issue. Got about 7-8mpg while towing and I never really used it not towing.

First

2000 Ford F350 7.3l Diesel with 48' gooseneck with 2 cars (with Titan back in 2004) -- Truck had full Turbo back exhaust and a programmer
-- i think this truck has 30k ish miles on it when Nero bought it, they still have it and use it, i am sure the mileage is up there now
-- ran good, 7-8 mpg, good power to pull the trailer
-- transmission blew up in Reading, PA at Maple Grove, stranded for a week

Second

2002 Ford Excursion, 7.3l with 30' Bumper pull trailer, 1 car inside -- Truck had full Turbo back exhaust and a programmer
-- truck had 66k miles on it when i bought it, has 128k miles on it now, you couldn't tell from the way it looks or drives
-- setup with a Weight Distribution Hitch and Sway Control (a must have for bumper pull in my opinion)
-- ran good, 9-10 mpg, good power to pull the trailer
-- excursion's suspension is kind of weak to be pulling the weight we were, butt end of the truck sagged a lot and ruined a set of tires quickly
-- Excursion was great to have for the trip, plenty of room in the interior
-- my wife still drives this truck daily, runs like a champ, I love it and will probably never get rid of it
-- in the future if this truck gets tow duty again i already upgraded the shocks and put a rear sway bar on it -- would next consider putting the F350 rear leaf springs on it or at the very least a set of air bags in the rear to level the vehicle out once it is hooked to the trailer

Third

2002 Ford F350, 7.3l with 48' gooseneck, 2 cars inside -- Truck had full Turbo back exhaust and a programmer
-- truck had 60k ish miles on it when i bought it -- sold it with 85k ish miles on it -- was still doing trailer duty during 2007 and running strong, had a new warranty backed transmission in it though, that is a nice thought to have in the back of your mind
-- 7-8 mpg, good power to pull the trailer
-- transmission blew up coming back from Las Vegas event in 2006, left 2 guys stranded for 2 extra days on the way back, Deja Vu

I love the 7.3L Ford diesel engines, they run like champs and will last forever, great power delivery too -- the transmissions blow if you are pulling a lot of weight, would definately look into all aftermarket upgraded parts in the future if I run one of those combinations again.

I am very confident with the Excursion and a 20'-24' Bumper pull trailer for the life of the transmission to be fairly reliable.

Nice tow vehicles you guys have.

I use wifes 2005 Nissan Pathfinder, and my 2007 Honda Ridgeline.

They sure ain't turbo diesels but they do the job of towing my Integra on an open two axle trailer. The Pathfinder has more power and torque to pull but the Ridgeline feels more solid and less prone to trailer sway. I prefer my Ridgeline.

Towing MPG is about 10mpg on both. I have never calculated it.

I have towed with 2 trucks:

GMC denali with 4ws- towed great couldnt even tell there was a heavy uhaul trailer behind it. gas mileage was a killer but never under powered had no issue keeping up with the diesel infront of us. 6.0 had tons of usable power and filled it 2 times for a 10hr round trip. 7-12mpg depending on the traffic

99 F250 supercab long bed- gas mileage was awesome and towed really well. had 169000miles on it at the time and apparently I just made it home because when it was used to tow again it had to be towed home itself with a bad tranny. 12-13mpg to MIR from pgh

07 2500 chevy 6L gasser 4L80E box
100% stock
18' open deck
no problems, little pricey at the pump but made it round trip from my house to MIR well 30 miles from round trip. (240 miles)

pulls well rides better with the trailer on it. has towing package, tranny temps never got high.

06 Chevy Sierra 2500 series duramax turbo deisel with allison trans.

Has pulled our full 2.5 ton 24' camper on many a trips and with no problems. I doubt it will have any issues pulling my >2300lb hatch.

i have a 2006 gmc sierra ext cab short bed truck with a 5.3l v8 all stock never sat down and actually figured fuel mileage but the most i got out of a tank of gas towing was about 350 miles and i think it took about 23 gallons to fill it up. and it was pulling a 18' open trailor. i bought it brand new and it has about 34k on it right now.

I drive an 06 gmc 1500 4x4 now with the 5.3 and an open trailer with my car will pull it down a bit. I am getting a new 28ft enclosed trailer and I dont think it will work too well I have been told.

99 f250 in my sig, love it to death its pulled a 28 ft enclosed trailer without even getting worked, tranny temps didn't go over 140 degrees the entire time

also tow an 18ft open trailer occasionally, which is even easier

gotta love that 7.3 motor

02 Ford SVT Lightning pulling a 16ft open trailer. It actually does really well towing but gets horrible gas mileage and its too small to bring alot of stuff. Hopefully selling it this week and planning on getting an 06-07 Chevy/GMC 2500hd Duramax then maybe an enclosed trailer in the future.

06 Ram 3500 MegaCab with the Cummins. BullyDog Triple Dog, 5" exhaust, intake, GT3782R, bigger intercooler, worked trans + 2 coolers, 4" lift and I think 38" tires. Gets around 15 on the highway pulling a 30 foot enclosed. Power is a non-issue as it makes over 500 RWHP and 1100 RWTQ. It's nice, lots of room for ALL your **** in the cab and you can strech out in the back seat for a nap if you're not driving. And if the car breaks, it's still fun to go down the track in the tow rig

yeah, my wife and i had an '03 trailblazer back in '03-04 and it was kind of scary to use to tow, used it for a 18' open trailer and a 16' enclosed trailer before for a couple of around town trips, granted i am used to using duallies or at least diesel powered vehicles for towing but i wouldn't hook up a trailer to a trailblazer and feel comfortable making a 1000 mile round trip with it

at the very least looking into stepping up to a Tahoe, i have always loved the '03-05 Tahoe Z71s -- i think that would make a nice combination daily and weekend tow vehicle

P.S. Your guys truck payments are out of control, you should of just bought Porsche 911's and called it a day

currently a 00 z71 exteded cab silverado 5.3L. tows my 18' open deck and the car, or my a 23' center concle w/ a yamaha HPDI 150. has enough power for what i do, but the 4 speed trans blows, every shift it like falls out of power a little bit. i am kicking around a 08 GMC 4 door w/ 6L gas with the optional 6 speed trans. deisels are cool but i have no use for one, and the sticker shock as well, lol..

Alot of people making good money Your payments are stupid. Those vehichels depreciate so much in one year. My buddy just boughta 06 f350 crew daullie with 5th wheel ready to go for $30k. It has 20thou miles and is perfect. Your payment would be more than half. My f250 gas and 24ft enclosed loaded pulls pretty nice. The engine works but that what they do

I just bought a 04 Silverado 1500HD and it towed great, has extended cab so i can even take friends with me now. But belive it or not i used to tow with a Ford ranger v6 and i would tow doing 85mph and it never let me down. I towed a 16 foot trailor! and i got 400 miles per tank!! I miss that truck already!!

anyone ever towed with one of the old ford 7.3's before the turbo? there is one with 85k on it at a local deal on a trade and a friend was asking me about it.

I was also thinking about a ranger with ext cab for down the road cause probably I am goin to need it to daily drive as I cant justify 3 different vehicles
