XM radio?
When I see a head unit I like, when it says "xm satellite radio ready" does that mean I can just pay for the service and i got xm? or do I still have to get a antenna for it to work?
thanks

Re: (bushfreakz)
I think you need the antennae as well as paying for the service fee. My boss had it installed on his Lude, and he had an "xm ready" headunit. They had to put the antenna on the trunk and he pays the service fees.

so if the unit says that.. it means it has the ability to scroll thru the catagories... Cause I also saw "xm integrated" which I guess is somewhat different.. I can't find much info on this stuff for some reason.

Re: (nixadm)
I really don't know to be honest. I think XM ready means that you can control an XM unit through the headunit? Maybe XM integrated means that it actually has an XM controller IN the headunit? Do you see the xm ready and xm integrated on the same brand of headunits or on different brands? Could be the exact same thing just named differently.

Re: (Ricey McRicerton)
I believe xm ready means just that READY which mean you need an outside source and the headunit just controls it. just like an HD ready tv needs and out side reciever to display HD...
so i say it means its capable but not built in

Actually,
Heres how it works-
XM-Intergrated: Means that it has the tuner built into the unit itself and all you need to do is make sure theres an antena on the outside of your vehical. EASY as hell to spot there ALLWAYS on the outside because they wont work inside the vehical.
XM-Ready: Means that the unit will suport an XM-Tuner, Think of that as a cd-changer. You have to wire it in somewhere ie. the trunk and hook up an antenna and run a cable to your unit.
Either way you need a subscription to Xm for about 9.95 a month less if you but it in more then a 1yr term. But i HIGHLY recomend it!!!!!!

Re: (nocternaldragon)
thanks for the info..
so if I am buying a new unit I should try getting the integrated instead of the ready? because if i buy the ready i still have to buy the tuner and the antenna right?

fwiw - i bought the xm w/ an fm modulator since radio in an eg sucks. the antenna is SO bad on our cars that it couldn't get a very good signal from the fm modulator. i could hear some static... sad.

Re: (nixadm)
That would be the way to go, But when i ussed to work in sales we never caried them so i dont know how much they cost. But for example in my car im running a pioneer head unit 6400 (just for the display) and it cost about 350 the Tuner cost me about 150 because it will only work for an Xm-Ready unit. Theres anther tuner also made by pioneer for 200 i belive that has an Fm modulator on it for non Xm-Ready head units. What you do with the 2nd one is hook it up to your antena port and tune to a certain station and listen that way but your gonna have a second keypad you use to tune the Xm stations in with. With mine i use the radio for EVERYTHING because its compatable so. My advice is get an Xm-ready or Xm-Intergrated unit. because it just looks better and is easier to operate. Make sense? hit me up if you need more info. Im gonna look for some links to show you what i mean with the different units.

the antenna on your car will not work

Not correct. Glass doesn't reject much of the RF band that these radios use.
I use Sirius, my antenna is under my sunroof on top of the sliding cover. Works fine. Another guy has his antenna under his back window (not tinted) and it works fine. You will lose some signal, yet I couldn't imagine it working any better than it does now in respect to reception.

Re: (PupaScoopa)
Pupa is correct on this.
When I worked @ Circuit and installed the Carin Navigation system I always
mounted the antenna in the car. As long as the car did not have any metallic
film content in the glass the system will work. ( as long as no metal is above
or to the sides of it ) Anyway, the new micro antennas are a world of difference
from the first gen antenna ( the hockey puck and the ***** ).
As for XM ready...you need to add the reciever ( the terk universal/with correct
adaptor or the matching module and antenna) and activate.
With XM Integrated..all you do is add the xm antenna and activate.

Re: (audioroach)
There is supposed to be an XM tuner called XM Direct that will be coming out for certain OEM applications as well as for Alpine, Pioneer and I think Sony or Kenwood aftermarket HU's. The only problem is it's release keeps on getting pushed back (I believe now they say it's October). But it will allow you to have full control of it through your XM ready HU. No need for RF modulators and the like. It's already on the market for BMW's and MINI's.
Here's the link: http://www.xmradio.com/xm_direct/

Right the glass dosent do crap to the signal its the metal the car is made of that blocks the Xm signal. Ive heard of ppl putting them inside the car but i dont recomend it. But you can try it, its just not the best place in my opinion thats all.

Re: (nocternaldragon)
by the way, there's been a great addition to XM. Sirius has the NFL and a couple other sports that they re-broadcast the audio stream... XM now has select college footbal conferences, and I think the ACC is one, and I know for a fact the Big 10 is one... I was listening to the Penn State game just this past saturday on XM at work.
