Default Grifty's EF5 RT-SI 4WD Intrac sedan

So I picked up this car in late Feb.

Some people here may know me as I own a JDM MA3 RT4WD Concerto.

Build thread for that is here: Concerto RT4WD build - D-series.org

I've been wanting this for a while, I bugged my friend for 2-3 years to get the owners to sell it to me. The previous owner was my friends partners cousin. He owned it for 19 years after importing it from Japan and decided to sell it after the windscreen cracked. My friend kept on telling me about it and how'd he'd be first in line if they ever sold it but he had to pass on the offer die to life circumstances so I was next in line.

The body is pretty beat so a full respray is on the cards.

Plan is to fix it up mechanically first then get the body fixed up.

Currently the ABS and 4WD lights are illuminated so I need to read those codes first. It drives fine but it needs a full service and the brakes looked at.

I'll let the pictures do the talking. More to come soon!

I have been able to do a few small things to the car over the past few days. I've just been focusing on getting it running right first.

Soldered the main relay after it cut out on me for 20 mins at a petrol station today.

Changed the gearbox oil, diff oil, engine oil and filter, spark plugs, leads and fuel filter. the old fuel filter was the original one before it left Japan some 19 years ago, that was interesting haha.

Got rid of the 4WD and ALB error lights but the ALB modulator needs new o-rings. Good to know that the ALB works properly as it should apart from the leak.

New front filler and a facelift front bar will be on the way soon!

I heaven't really had a chance to do much on this lately. but I did purchase a set of wheels from a DC2. They came with good tread, all I need now is to get a set of oem wheel nuts to get them on.

I also plan on upgrading the front brakes to 262mm and a bigger master cylinder. The EF5 uses a 12mm rear BMC fitting so i'll need to buy a adaptor for that.

Other list of things to be done soon are

Respray - closed door
New winscreen
New exhaust

Thanks Steve, If I can't find any locally I'll let you know!

I just got this in the mail, unfortunately it had to be cut in half otherwise postage would've been astronomical.

I'll get it welded back together during the respray.

Definitely needs to be lower...

I got around to replacing the CV boots today & re-grease the joints, took the chance to check out the condition of all the joints while I was at it as well. These boots should last another 5+ years now.

New windscreen has been booked for Monday and hopefully I can replace the BMC tomorrow.

Thought I'd also share some photos of my concerto while I'm at it.

Had the windscreen replaced, the old one was beyond salvaging...

I swapped out the master cylinder for one that a friend donated.

I also calibrated the TPS but didn't take any photos of that.

The original is a 7/8 and the one I installed is a 15/16.

You can see the adaptor that I had to use to make the 12mm line fitting work.

Before removal, as you can see there isn't a prop valve.

Installed, yet to bleed the system though.

The old one...

Tested out the 4WD on a random grass patch, confirmed the rear LSD works good

Picked these up for a steal, just need EG/DC front forks and fork type rear LCA

Polished up the headlights and sorta fixed the front bar a little. Removed the headlight washer system, might re-install at a later date.

This past Friday started with me picking up a full Hardrace bushing kit

Next step was to remove all the arms from the car apart from the RTA. I didn't want to remove the RTA as it would've meant bleeding the brakes again which isnt fun.

Got under way pressing the bushes out, the only bush i had to burn & cut out was the front outer LCA bush, that wouldn't even budge on a 20T press.

made sure to grease em up before pressing in

RTA bush was hammered in and out

I ended up replacing all of these parts as well, I had all new spares laying around apart from the rack boots.

How she sits now with the suspension installed, feels very nice and firm. The bushes have made a huge difference as the old ones were very worn.

Never seen a 4dr 4wd besides the wagons. Great pick up. Glad to see it getting proper attention.

Nice! Great work. Def a rare bird.

Perhaps remove the tint and go with something a little less agressive? I love the early-90's, Vanilla Ice, Miami-Vice look that the tint gives. But...maybe tame it down to say a 20% tint, and show off that RHD!!

Thanks guys!!

I think next on the playing cards is a exhaust, the current one is broken and i wouldn't mind a bit more power.

I think I'll swap the tint to a lighter bronze colour sometime this year, tint is a must during summer here in Australia. Good thing the A/C still works

Long time no update...

Long story short, I ended up selling the car due to buying a DC2 type R, about 1.5yrs later the owner offers it back to me to buy with a blown motor.

It's back in my possession now & getting proper attention! More updates soon

Getting it back, had it towed interstate.

The condition I received it in

It still had some of the spare parts that I gave to the previous owner when I sold it

Then I charged the battery to see if it would even start, no start....

looked down the cylinders with a tiny camera, can see that one of the valves hit the piston

Pulled off the cylinder head, lets play a game of spot the problem

Rod number 4 was no longer connected to the crank somehow, there was no hole in the block. Time for a new motor...

What I found after I pulled off the sump, surprise surprise haha

What was left of the connecting rod

I'm going to have a guess and say it was a oil starvation issue, it's a shame the original motor is now scrap...

While the motor was out it was a perfect time to clean the engine bay, I also removed the ALB system in order to clean it up, spray the rusty brackets and replace the leaky high pressure pump seal.

I'll also need to paint under the battery tray as there's some surface rust there

I also plan on cleaning up the wiring, mainly trying to route it nicer and re-tape it, not going for a tucked look in this car

Before:

After:

Another thing that it always needed replaced were the diff bushes, luckily many other Hondas use the same bushes such as the CRV. Picked up some aftermarket replacement ones for cheap

Any plans on what motor you're going to drop back in?

I'm currently working on it at the moment, it's basically the same motor but with ARP headstuds.

Re-conditioned cylinder head. new OEM Thermostat & PCV valve & associated hoses.

New ignition system components.

New OEM gaskets all round except for the headgasket as it's discontinued.

Here's basically the new motor for it, it's the Australian equivalent of the JDM DOHC ZC. They both make the same amount of power so I don't see there being any differences between them really.

Block cleaning progress:

Cylinder head on with ARP headstuds, B16 headstuds used with the middle on the intake side shaved shorter for clearance. Also painted the block for a fresh look:

Baking the rocker cover after painting with with wrinkle black:

Cleaned up all the cam caps and got them on, this was before I torqued them down:

Torqued down and tappets adjusted:

Majority of the parts I have accumulated for this motor, still waiting on a few more pieces to come in:

OEM timing belt:

Timing belt cover on with a new OEM timing belt sticker

I also managed to get a hold of this beautiful piece :D

Brand new and discontinued 4WD specific D series sump!

I think I'm going to keep this sump as a spare for the time being, I have another used 4WD sump that I will probably use and tig weld on a 10AN turbo oil return line. I don't want to reuse the original sump that was on the car as it's beat up and is full of metal.

Just test fitting the turbo and manifold, the turbo is borrowed from a friend. I'm really hoping to keep the full size radiator and air conditioning, I'll do whatever it takes to fit both haha

Here's a cool piece a friend of mine owns, they're DOHC ZC ITBs made by Japanese tuning company called PSI (?), he even has custom cams that came with the ITB's. Shame they don't fit my car as it'll hit the ALB modulator, but boost is better anyways

The old passenger door was in pretty poor condition, so I picked up another door on white to replace it. basically had to swap over all the door internals since JDM is very different to locally delivered versions.

I managed to pickup from aftermarket front and rear bars locally. The rear bar is a perfect fit but the front bar isn't exactly the same. There are quite a few differences between the normal non JDM facelift front bar and the JDM facelift front bar. The JDM front bar is in very bad shape so this aftermarket one will have to do for now till I find a replacement JDM bar.

I will still be keeping to original bumper, no intentions on binning them.

I also just purchased these, they are yet to arrive thought.

My rear lights aren't in the best condition unfortunately and the centre garnish has warped...

My car already has the leather stitched steering wheel but it's in pretty rough shape, this replacement should suit perfect!

These JDM auto climate control units are notorious for cracking, so I reinforced mine in the spot where they usually crack.

It happens due to the lack of support between the temperature control and the rest of the unit, there's a gap in between which creates the weak spot.

I just used some aluminium plate and 2 part epoxy on both sides, it should do the trick.

Also as these JDM bumper bar brackets are discontinued and super hard to source I'll be taking it upon myself to repair them. The front piece is spot welded onto the back. I plan on drilling out the spot welds, hammering the face back to what it should be then welding it back together. I just recently purchased a tig welder so this shouldn't be too hard. They'll also get some fresh paint once completed
