Default removing remains of graphite head gasket

i'm putting a d-series motor back together for my friend. it did not have the multi-layer steel head gasket that I am familiar with on the b-series.

it had like a graphite based gasket and there are some chunks left on the head. how can i safely remove it? i have an air die grinder with a wire brush wheel but i dont' want to be the reason my friend needs to mill his head. any suggestions?
