Default B20vtec...Cutting Valve relief and Cam options.

setup in my daily driver is a stock b20 vtec with b20b block and 2nd gen b16 head. Looking for more power so I plan to build a custom header, cut and port an ITR intake manifold and upgrade the cams (ITR/CTR maybe BC 3+'s)

Ive "heard" that run any cam larger than stock requires cutting of the valve reliefs. if anyone can give me some more info on this (maybe a definate answer on if ITR/CTR cams will work WITHOUT cutting the reliefs) and how exactly they went about cutting the reliefs that would be great..

sorry for the newbie questions...Im new to the all motor world

Not to bad an *** but it doesnt really make sense to run big cams on a low compression motor, and one that doesnt rev high safely.

Personally id go ahead and make the header and do all the other bolts-ons if you dont want to touch the block.

Ill let others chime in, cause as of right now im bench racing.

I wouldnt recomend cutting valve reliefs because there is a possibility of you cutting uneven amounts on each pistons, throwing your rotating assembly out of whack. But im sure that you would be able to rum some mild cams like CTR/ITR or BC3's on stock block without having pistons to valve contact...if your going to build a header...why not take the time n clay the motor? lol

Mine is a stock B20b block with GSR head. Im not sure if running typer cams will be a problem without cutting the valve reliefs but I run s2s2 cams and i had to modify the valve pockets wich was done by a machine shop. HTH

Well, I have a stock b20 bottom end with the arp bolts and ge head studs. Gsr head with 01 itr cams. I basically took a circular saw the size of the valve relief, and englarged then my self by eye. I have not had any ill effects from this, and my motor with basic bolt ons made 185 and 144. Hope that helps you
