Q: Replacing CR-V oil pan gasket?
A friend has a 2001 CR-V. The dealer wanted to replace the oil pan gasket at a price of about $265. I crawled under the vehicle and took a look, and there is oil on the bottom of the pan and seems to be a bit of oil around the gasket area as well, so maybe there is a valid concern there.
The price seemed a bit high to me... Is it necessary to pull the exhaust downpipe off in order to remove and reinstall the pan? It looks like the pan could also possibly be removed and replaced if the plastic "shield" (which sits just to the driver's side of the oil pan) were removed; then the oil pan might be able to slide sideways to clear the exhaust before dropping down. But it's conceivable that there might be something inside the bottom of the engine which would interfere with that...
Anybody done this gasket replacement? Any issues that aren't obvious from a casual look under the car?

The oil pump pickup is mounted to the bottom of the block and dips down into the deep part of the pan. I've not been underneath a first-generation CR-V in some time, but I doubt there is enough clearance to get the pan off without removing the downpipe.

What am I missing? 2003 Honda CR-V LX 2WD 2.4L L4 DOHC 16V 138,000 mi. I have been trying to get this oil pan off for two days now. It's loose and resting on the frame, bolts all removed. It will not clear oil pump, can't slide or pull it down. It will tilt downward towards the flywheel and clear its bolts, but the frame of the car is not permitting clearance on its other end. Just not enough wiggle room. Can't slide towards the rear as it rests on the frame without clearance of the oil pump and the frame has a ridge that also prevents it from sliding.
