Thinking about purchasing a CRV for winters.... opinions?
Just like the topic says, I am looking to buy a 1998-99 CRV for my winter ride. Basically, I have heard performance horror stories about the B20 (less then 130HP) and I was wondering what HT CRV owner thought on this? What are their real world driving performance thoughts?
Cheers

Re: Thinking about purchasing a CRV for winters.... opinions? (DJ Nokturnal)
hey hey. I have a CR-V as my daily driver. It is my first car and i love it overall. If you are looking into buying a first generation CR-V then you want to take a look at whether you want a 1997-1998 OR a 1999- 2001. The CR-V's produced in 1999-2001 had an extra increase of 20 hp in comparison to the 97-98's. (Nothing big...but a difference nonetheless.
As far as reliability...i have had NO PROBLEMS whatsoever (**knock on wood**). THe engine is underpowered so when you hit the highway or want to hit high speeds...your engine will rev REALLY high. Slow off the line... but again...you have to realize it's not a race car. It's a small SUV.
Toss on a set of snowies for winter...and your good to go. I've got the Michelin Artic alpin's and it's like i'm driving on normal road condition. Made it through each of the lil' blizzards we had in Toronto with no problems whatsoever! (I drove from Cambridge to Mississauga during those snowy times!)
Hope that helps. Lemme know if you need any more info.
To a Honda CR-V. Check out hondasuv.com for more members and opinions. although i'm sure they will be pretty biased.

So ironic...
I am interested in getting a decent winter vehicle such as the CRV and today I rear end someone due to the slippery roads. Locked up my 91 Civic HB and slide right into her.
Guess I will have to fast track the buying of the CRV.
The one I have my eyes on is a 98 LX CRV. The only issue I have is the reported lack of power. I guess I will find out when I test drive it on Monday.
Thanks man....

my dad has one, its not a bad car over all but if u want to drive it in the snow you will NEED better tires. The stock tires will spin out in the rain, kinda sad IMO.

Re: (JDMITR22)
The crv has some torque but really lacks power. **** it gets me from point a to point b when my teg is dead . It's really reliable then .

Re: (roydogg)
it depends on what ur defintion of underpowered is. if you're jumping from a "fast" car to a "slower" car then you'll notice the lack of power. But overall.. driving the cr-v is fine for me. you don't really need to hit the gas for highway entrances in my personal experience...it has a lot of low end, so city driving is great. good gas mileage. i still slide in the snow/ice with the rtawd. but that's the fun part awd drift! try looking for ex models cause they give you rims instead of the steelies. oh, and 2000 was the se came out, (leather, body mold color, hard tire cover, et al.) good luck on purchase.

I drove my mom's 00 CRV SE in the snow and I didn't think it was all that great compared to my dads Toyota Land Cruiser.
'00 CRV's have 146HP I think.....
Go look in this thread https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=747371
There bitches sayin that SUV are worst in the snow than just regular cars.
