Default 98 CRV TRanny Shifting Problem

New here...

The problem is it seems to slip when shifting from 2nd to 3rd. The motor revs a bit and the shift takes 2-3 seconds to complete. It does not slam into gear hard on the upshift.

What could be causing this?

Is it something I can expect to get repaired without pulling the engine & transmission?

It is a common problem with Honda transmissions. My dad's old 91 civic did this and my brother's 94 integra does the exact same thing.

You could try changing/flushing the transmission fluid; it may help.

my CRV did this but when the clutch was already engaged with the flywheel.. we found that the clutch was really worn and had to replace it. 110k miles lol and me as the student driver...do the math.

I work at tranny shop, when a customer walks in and asks me to do a fluid change, I always ask what is wrong with the vehicle. Truth is, fluid changes rarely if ever fix shifting problems. YES you do need to change the fluid in order to prolong tranny life, but it doesn't fix problems.
The problem you are having is probably a shift solenoid, I am not sure which tranny you have in the vehicle. When your computer commands the shift, the solenoid (if bad) may take longer to apply. If the solenoid is working properly, then the valve it is activating may be hanging up (Caused by a worn valve, or foreign material). There are a few more posabilities. To be honest the delayed engagement usually causes your clutches inside the trans to slip. If you wait for a long time you could cost yourself some major $$$.
I also know that there was a bad run on factory honda solenoids, I specifically remember changing solenoids out on a 98 accord not to long ago. Even though the tranny's are different, a lot of the solenoids are the same. Most tranny shops offer free diag. If is is a bad solenoid, you will probably be out 200-350$ at the most. If you were to wait, and eventually burn up the clutches, they will want to do a rebuild and charge you 18-3600$.
Solenoids are external, and an easy fix. I could get you the Info on checking them out if you want me to. That is if you are a do it yourselfer.
